Fic: Frozen Yogurt

Feb 25, 2012 13:35

It just wasn’t fair, Sam thought as he sunk into the couch and flipped through the channels looking for something mindless. He’d done everything right; everything he was supposed to in order to get the girl and Mercedes rejected him again because she didn’t like the order in which things happened? Like it was his fault that she hadn’t broken up with Shane weeks ago?

Nothing ever seemed to work out for him when it came to dating. He tried to be the perfect boyfriend, tried to do everything these girls wanted, be everything they wanted and it never got him anywhere. Quinn cheated on him with Finn and then basically went crazy for an entire year, Santana dumped him for Karofsky and then they both ended up being gay (Sam was still confused about that part?) and Mercedes apparently wouldn’t say yes if her life depended on it at this point.

He was about halfway through the tub and X-Men 3 (So disappointing, much like his love life) when he heard keys jiggling in the door. He figured it was Burt and Carole and was surprised when he saw Kurt walk in alone, take one look at him, and head for the kitchen. He walked back into the living room a few seconds later with his own spoon and plopped down next to Sam on the couch.

“Gimmee,” Kurt said, grabbing at the frozen yogurt.

“Hey,” Sam said pulling back on the tub. “I’m pretty sure only one of us got a breakup song sung at us when we weren’t even in a relationship today. Why do you need this?”

Kurt huffed and folded his arms across his chest. “Trust me you don’t want to know.”

“Try me.”

“You know all those cards and gifts from my ‘Secret Admirer’ that I thought were from Blaine?” Kurt said, using air quotes to emphasize secret admirer. “Well it turns out they were from Karofsky, who thinks he’s in love with me.”

Sam handed over the frozen yogurt without another word. Kurt had gotten through two large spoonfuls before Sam was even able to process what Kurt had said. “Wait what? Are you okay? He didn’t try anything, did he?”

“It’s fine, calm down,” Kurt said, licking the spoon clean. “I told you, he’s basically harmless nowadays. But obviously the double whammy of not getting anything from your boyfriend and having your former tormenter declare their love for you was not exactly what I was hoping would be in store for Valentine’s 2012.”

“Did you tell Blaine? Was he upset?”

“Nah, I didn’t bother. He was tired out from his performance tonight anyway so I didn’t want to cause him any stress. I just dropped him off at home.” Kurt handed the tub back to Sam. “Not to diminish what happened to you, of course. I’m really sorry about Mercedes.”

Sam shrugged his shoulders and took another bite. “It’s whatever - not like I haven’t been broken up with before, though at least there’s usually an actual relationship first.”

Kurt patted his knee comfortingly. “Well she doesn’t know what she’s missing. You and some girl are going to be ridiculously happy together someday, I just know it.”

Sam mustered up a half-smile. He didn’t really believe it but he appreciated Kurt trying. “I guess so. And I’m sure Blaine would have gotten you something if he hadn’t been recovering from slushee surgery.”

Kurt let out a half-laugh before catching himself and covering his mouth. He turned towards Sam with a finger pointed his way. “I did not laugh at that, okay?”

“Of course not,” Sam agreed, hands up in acquiescence. “Blaine’s not-at-all funny injury is a serious matter.”

Kurt set the now empty frozen yogurt tub on the coffee table and leaned back beside Sam. Due to the sunken nature of the couch it funneled the both of them into the center, with Kurt’s left side pressed up against Sam’s right side. It felt . . . nice, warm. It felt kind of like being home.

“What a pair we make,” Kurt said, glancing over at Sam with a wry smile.

“Yeah,” Sam replied softly. “What a pair indeed.”
