Her Devastated Heart

Jun 09, 2011 21:16

This poem is a result of a songwriting book I'm reading called "Becoming Remarkable" by Harriet Schock, and an exercise which she suggested about using the perspective of some of our favorite characters. She meant in books or movies, but before I knew it, I was contemplating the last few episodes of Sanctuary and what they've taught us about the Magnus/Watson relationship. The poem/lyrics could stand on their own, but for those who are fans of Sanctuary, they hold special meaning.

Enjoy!

Her Devastated Heart

She didn't know
When it happened,
That the man
Who hid himself
In shadows
Had swept up all
The ashes of
Her devastated heart.
She didn't know
When she first saw him
That his physician's hand
Would spend a lifetime
Reaching past
The caution tape
That sealed off
Her devastated heart.

She didn't know-
She couldn't see
Past his friend's
Deep passion-
That still, he stayed,
True and faithful,
Ready to protect
Her devastated heart.

She hadn't known
When sparks first flew
That sparks would lead
To all-consuming fire
Which would burn upon
The flesh within
Her devastated heart.

She didn't know
Exactly when
She'd fallen for
This healer.
But only knew
She could not give
Her devastated heart.

She didn't know
That some years later,
Upon the death
Of this dear friend
She'd look and find
A parting gift-
A fragile sprout-
In the ashes of
Her devastated heart.
