Treat or Treat

Posted here because I thought my LJ was lonely. =w=

An early Halloween present for Desearu. =7=

http://desearu.deviantart.com/art/APH-quot-like-a-family-quot-fanart-183234515 <-- Someone in the comments section of this pic was like "you should make a fic" and Dessie said "maybe I will" and I, because I can't resist a challenge/am some sort of masochist, said, "No, I'LL make a fic. =7=" Never mind that I said this while swamped with homework and NaNoWriMo on the horizon.

Anyway. Nikolai (Kaliningrad) is an OC that Desearu and I worked together to make. (He's in the pic in that link up there.) Isn't he adorbs? ;w; He's Gilbert's son, but given what Kaliningrad is, he's also Ivan's son. =7=;; He considers Gilbert to be the daddy and Ivan to be the mommy, though (not that he would ever call Ivan "mommy" to his face). And he likes Daddy more. XD

Buh. I started this fic while half-asleep, worked on it more while half-asleep and stressed (essays and reading and needing to actually finish writing down the plot of my NaNoWriMo novel oh my), and then finished it while in desperate need of a nap. I'm sorry that it's so short and crappy. ;w; I hope it's at least a bit serviceable, since NaNoWriMo is going make me more or less disappear for the entirety of November.

In the basement, Gilbert fussed to and fro, moving various sewing materials from place to place on his desk. (After a few centuries of fending for oneself, one acquires such skills, after all.) In the center of the mess were two black hoodies, one larger than the other. Both of them had little "devil horns" sewn onto the hood, tiny bat wings sewn on the back, and various "stitches" and a skull on the body, the placement of these reversed on both jackets.

Ludwig had gone down to the basement for a reason that he swiftly forgot when he saw how busy Gilbert was. "What in the world are you doing?"

"Making Halloween costumes!" came the almost triumphant-sounding reply. Gilbert spun around in his chair to face his brother. "I've decided that I wanna go trick-or-treating with Nikolai before we go to the big stupid party you guys have every year." The "stupid" just kind of fell out of his mouth; he rarely had very good memories of the yearly Halloween parties the nations would throw. Normally, Ludwig would get pulled away by Feliciano, and all attempts to even slightly tease (or sometimes, even talk to) Austria and Hungary would backfire horribly, so Gilbert would spend most of the time huddled in his corner, stuffing himself with whatever treats he could get his hands on and possibly smuggling some home. Naturally, he would firmly deny that anything was wrong when asked, and occasionally Francis and Antonio would keep him company, but normally it was the same routine every year.

This year, however, he was determined to have at least a little fun this Halloween. Therefore, his solution of choice was to take his son out trick-or-treating. It was almost impossible for him to be sad whenever Nikolai was around.

"Oh, that's nice," Ludwig mumbled, pleasantly surprised. "I'm sure he'll enjoy it." His attention suddenly went elsewhere. "What are those, and where did you get them?" he added, gesturing to two tinfoil-covered pitchforks, one bigger than the other, in the corner.

"Pitchforks, duh. And I bought them myself. I just covered them in tinfoil so that they'd look shiny. By the way, you now need more foil," Gilbert grumbled, none too fond of the accusation creeping in Ludwig's voice. "We're going as devils, you know. You've got to take a picture of us together on your iPhone when we're all dressed up! Besides, it'll look great next to the one you snuck of us napping together."

A faint blush came to Ludwig's face when Gilbert brought up the not-really-a-secret. Gilbert looked so peaceful and content sleeping next to Nikolai that he couldn't resist taking a picture to look at whenever he felt worried. "Fine, fine, I will."

Right after Ludwig said that, there was a knock on the door, and Gilbert perked up. "Pretty sure that's him! Go get the door for me. I'm still a little busy here." To indicate that Ludwig didn't really have much choice in the matter, he refused to budge an inch.

With some assorted grousing, Ludwig did as he was told and opened the door to find little Nikolai standing there, his usual sweet smile on his face. "Hi, Uncle Ludwig," he chirped. "Is Daddy in his room?"

"Yes, of course," Ludwig said as he led the little boy downstairs.

When they arrived, Gilbert had finally finished putting the last details on the costumes, and he proudly held up Nikolai's hoodie when the two came down. "Look, Niko! I made awesome costumes for both of us! We're going to match!"

Nikolai stared at the hoodie for a moment, a puzzled look in his red-purple eyes. "What are we going to be?"

"Devils!" Gilbert had a goofy grin on his face that didn't seem likely to fade any time soon.

The confusion faded from the little boy's face, and the smile returned. "We're going to be a daddy devil and a little devil?"

"That's right! Now put this on so Uncle Ludwig can take a picture."

After some fussing (mostly from Nikolai), the two were dressed and ready to go. Ludwig took a quick picture with his phone, and got ready to send the two on their way. "Have fun, and don't forget to inspect his candy for anything suspicious when you get back," Ludwig said as he watched them go.

"I already planned to do all of those things, West," Ludwig called over his shoulder. He was walking down the street, Nikolai's hand firmly gripped in his right hand, and his pitchfork in his left. Nikolai happily bounced along next to him, his pitchfork in his right hand, and his candy bag hung between the tines of the upright fork. Nikolai added a cheery, "Bye, Uncle Ludwig," as the two disappeared around the corner.

A few hours later, Gilbert returned with a visibly exhausted Nikolai by his side, the bag hanging from his fork now just about loaded with treats. Ludwig was in the middle of putting on his costume (that stinking werewolf/dog costume that Feliciano roped him into) when the two entered. "Well? How did it go?"

"It was fun," Nikolai mumbled, though clearly he'd be more enthusiastic if he weren't so sleepy. "Daddy took me all over town, and there were a lot of nice people in funny costumes."

"It was great!" Gilbert almost shouted, as if what Nikolai said wasn't really enough. "All these people kept coming by and going, 'awwww, you two match! That's so cute!' and people couldn't stop talking about how adorable Niko was! Clearly, he's got my awesome!" He was practically glowing with happiness. Taking Nikolai out had clearly been the right decision to make, and perhaps he had enough joy to take him through the party later. "And then there was this old woman who was like, 'you're such a responsible young man!' I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm a teen dad or something now."

"She thought I was your little brother," Nikolai corrected, trying to be helpful. "But that's Uncle Ludwig."

Ludwig simply chuckled. "It's nice to see you two so happy."

"It is, isn't it?" As he spoke, Gilbert took Nikolai's treat bag off the fork and plopped it on the table. "I'd better get Sleepyhead here to bed before he falls asleep on the living room floor." His attention returned to Nikolai as he led him downstairs. "We'll go through your treats in the morning, okay? And no sneaking anything while I'm gone! You don't know what people might have hidden in the candy! I hear there's candy that has bugs in it..." Nikolai didn't respond with much more than a drowsy "Mm-hm" to all of Gilbert's rambling.

After the usual pre-bedtime rituals, Gilbert stood by Nikolai as the boy got into bed, and then tucked the covers around his son as snug as he could (never mind that the tighter he tucked, the more likely the bedcovers were to be a complete mess when he returned). "Did you really have fun tonight, kiddo?"

"Mm-hm. Yep. Thanks, Daddy." Already, Nikolai's eyes were drooping closed. All that walking took a lot out of him.

"Good." Gilbert ruffled the white hair that was just like his own and gave the little head a pat. "Sleep well, okay? Daddy has somewhere to go tonight with Uncle Ludwig, but you'll be fine."

"'Kay. Night, Daddy." Nikolai pulled the covers around him, which ruined that perfect tuck that Gilbert had made, but it didn't concern him that much.

"Night, Niko. Sweet dreams." Gilbert took a few last minutes to watch over Nikolai as he slept, much like he used to do with Ludwig when he was a child. When he felt sure that Nikolai was peacefully asleep, he ventured back upstairs to join Ludwig, a huge smile on his face. Let's see those guys try to ruin Halloween for me this time, he thought to himself as he went, triumph echoing in his mind.
