two cents

maybe there should be two scrabble organizations in north america. one can be for those who want to travel to overpriced suburban hotels every other weekend to play the same people they always play in 14-game round robins stretched over three days with equal prizes for each division (or whatever else they want to do), and in their forum they may discuss important issues like whether or not to have tablecloths in the playing room, or the inclusion of dinner with the hotel, or whether to stick with twl or go to the ospd .  the other group will meet at more creative, moderately priced venues (accessible to transportation) and play tsh-paired (collins?) games, one division with a predetermined prize structure, and that forum will post game and tournament related news and constructive discussions. i think these two groups could coexist in a mutually supportive manner, or, at the very least, stop bickering long enough to work together as a community to increase exposure to the game.
