my 8-7-1 finish accomplished my goal of winning more than i lost, and that combined with finishing 30 places above my seeding made up for not finishing in the (class prize) money. i was always in good company and had a great weekend. my rating increase should be somewhat substantial, and i felt i was playing fairly well.
what i SHOULD have done was put some cash on mike yowonske finishing in the top ten. even before the cgp explosion on this topic, i had more than a couple discussions (arguments?) about his legitimacy as a player (particularly one that doesn't cheat). i have played a couple games of clabbers against him, chatted a bit, and just wasn't willing to make any assumptions. additionally, he is a really nice kid, and a great addition to the community.
this tournament also boasted the most people named sam (or similar) of any i have attended...sammy okosagah, sam rosin, samantha southard, samuel moch.
some stuff...
my blanks: 18
their blanks: 14
my bingos: 22 (three phonies)
their bingos: 23 (no phonies)
my average score: 397-ish
their average score: 394-ish
average rating of opponent: about 300 points higher than mine
(note: i did not include the one unrated player in this average.)
my high game: 494-298
my high loss: 419-463 (to the 8th seed!)
closest game: tie 407-407
hopefully, the energy to write up my games will come before i have simply put it off for too long...
there are almost too many people to pat on the back after such a tournament-packed weekend, so i'll keep it short. congrats to
endbrain and
magratheazaphod for their surprise winnings at the open, to terry and stefan for a pairs victory for the second year in a row (not to mention stefan's impressive undefeated win in the EB), and especially to
basophil for his tie for first at a local club tournament, demonstrating the kind of sportsmanship we don't see from enough players...although i must say that i am more than fortunate to see it often from so many of my friends.
