I would much rather work in a library! Because then you don't have fucking profit margins hanging over your head the whole time. I could get a job in the council library here, but it's a traineeship - and the wages that accompany a traineeship - and they don't like accepting people with a Bachelor's. "Too qualified", psssssssh. I'll have you know, my degree qualifies me for exactly nothing.
But I've never been on Booktopia! I'm after a few books at the mo', so I'll look there because I can't be fucked to order them from work. Their computer system is frightful. Disgustingly convoluted.
Plus, thrift stores are the best, much more exciting than ordinary, ordered bookstores. But I'm finding even they are getting more expensive nowadays - to be honest, though, I live in an expensive area. But I'm not paying $12 for a third-hand book, no sir.
I totally understand all of this. Both my mom and my brother have worked for a big bookstore chain for quite a few years. My mom has the same problems. :) (And the discount totally is awesome.)
I bought a tapas recipe book yesterday - it was, granted, a discounted book anyway but they gave me a staff discount on top of that. $1.80! They charged me $1.80! TAPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
What upsets me the most, is the price of books that don't even have a copyright anymore. I wanted to get Don Quijote once and it was like 20 bucks. I mean seriously? Cervantes has been dead for almost 400 years. That's not right.
As for the recommendations, I think people will return, if you give them good advice. Even if you tell them to get stuff somewhere else. I think they will appreciate your honesty and come back for that very reason.
I do tell people to go elsewhere, I just have to whisper it to them in dark corners. And I put up a new recommendation this morning, and sold all three copies! And am, hence, validated as a human being.
