Yesterday was a bit of a mess in terms of scheduling, so I was already harried and in a mood to be annoyed when I got a letter from the English dept telling me that I had been selected to TA for "Classic SF and Fantasy" next year, taught by a nice Medievalist who used to teach this course regularly. You would think this would be a good thing -- and it is better than nothing -- but I'm disappointed that neither of my stand-alone courses were chosen, and also, I'm annoyed that I'm not teaching this course.
I was angry enough to call an old friend to talk about other things (distraction therapy), but we got into a long discussion of feelings (therapy therapy), which I thought was very helpful. Like exercise or sitting down to write, talking about feelings may be hard, but in my experience, you're always glad you did it (which is why I'm looking forward to re-starting therapy on Monday).
The centerpiece question was simply, "Are you happy?" with the corollary, "What would make you happy?"
There are other related questions (what is happiness? is happiness worth working towards?), but let's start with the basics:
Are you happy?
If not, what would make you happy?
[I haven't seen the episode, or even the show, but the subject-line of this post is the title of an episode of Survivor, and I liked the title so much that I had to rescue/swipe it.]
