The Beginning of December

It's some time after four o'clock in the morning and I'm listening to unbelievably beautiful music through headphones in my apartment. In the distance it's just possible to make out the sound of a temple bell (?) being rung to call monks from their slumber. Sometimes it's easy to forget that I live in a suburb of the world's second-largest ( Read more... )

It was the perfect way to 'start' my day. And she was only about 9 years old, too!

the woman you describe... I find that Koreans like that (and there are honestly more of them than there are of the guy who hit you with his motorbike) are the reason WHY living here is great. Really... you are awesome to see and acknowledge the good stuff. So many blogs out there are so darned negative!

Bravo, Paul!

Hey... when I come up to Seoul to get married, maybe you could come down for brunch? I don't know how feasible that is for you on a weekday :(

Well, either way, you're invited to my wedding if you feel like coming down to Daegu for a night of swing and crazy cultural blending!

The reason why I posted about the motorbike hitting me is that it's so different from what I normally experience in Uijeongbu - or elsewhere in Korea for that matter - and left me feeling shocked. There have been a couple of occasions now where I've had taxi drivers stop and hold up traffic so I could jaywalk across the street. That stands in stark contrast to the belly-aching about '빨리 빨리' driving attitudes that (some) other expats indulge in.

The girl I spoke with the other day looked like she was around 9 years old (3학년?) and didn't really have any reason to greet me ... this wasn't even a case of wanting to try out the English she'd learned in class. Just simple caring.

My current schedule has me arriving at work by 2pm, so depending on the place and time I should be able to head down to Seoul for brunch. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Daegu if we can't meet up before then!
