Swine Flu in Uijeongbu

I haven't kept up on how other nations are tackling issues related to H1N1, but Brian in Jeollanam-do has been doing an admirable job of highlighting articles concerning H1N1 and its impact on education and tourism within South Korea. One interesting piece of news was hearing that the national government had considered shutting down all elementary ( Read more... )

I don't even know how many cases have been at my school...but I think there has been some.

It seems like some students are reporting any illness as swine flu these days. Makes it a bit harder to keep track of how many are actually suffering from H1N1 rather than a cold or the 'normal' flu.

I don't want to quote somebody from Facebook, so I'm hoping they'll send me something I can use, but I've seen people talking about not wanting---sometimes refusing---to teach considering the threat of swine flu. Talk about a reversal. One guy said that a teacher's child has swine flu, but the teacher is still coming to work.

That's very interesting to hear. This evening I had a student tell me that her younger brother - who I had taught less than 3 hours before - had just been diagnosed with H1N1 after feeling sick for a few days. Will be interesting to see if this effects anyone else in the class, including me.

I don't mean to seem callous, but from my eyes, it seems that Korea is seriously over-reacting to swine flu. As far as I am aware it is neither epidemic (as the general population thinks of it, not as the cdc defines it, because it has become quite obvious that their definitions of things like "pandemic" and "epidemic" are much more liberal than mine) or a plague, but I get the feeling that that South Korea is walking line on treating it as exactly that. Am I wrong?

No, I think what you said is a fairly accurate depiction of how many people (at least those in government policy-making positions) are behaving.

Hey Paul, I thought of you today and decided to visit your LJ. I saw on your profile that you have listed swing dancing and lindy hop as your interests! I recently just started swing dancing and thought it was a cool coincidence! How long have you been swing-dancing? My co-worker got me into it during halloween this year, because I dressed up as a flapper and told her I love jazz. So that's how i got into the whole swing and charleston dancing. I've been dancing on the weekends, but will probably take some classes soon so I can dance lindy hop later on. It's fun, isn't it?

Hope all is well with you in Korea!
Vivian
