When you were writing that... did you notice that all these special days fall all in May?
that's alot of public holidays for a month! :D
The guy seemed to be desperate, and hey, isn't that some sort of discrimination that only "foreigners" drink tequila!? And he can go back to etiquette class :D
Teetotaler, it's been so long since I last saw this word being used!
That's not all - there are another three 'holidays' in May that didn't get mentioned in this entry! Only two of these are considered public holidays though, and one of them fell on the weekend this year.
While I appreciate that the guy didn't automatically assume that I was a native English speaker - since not everyone is here to teach the language - it would have nice had he waited for me to finish talking with the florist before starting his spiel. Korea is probably the only counrtry still the Confucianism functions in all kind of society. The foremost value or virtue in this society is: 효 孝 filial piety or obedience to parents. Teacher's position is equal to the parent's. Parents and teachers are to be respected, in this society.
Married Couples' Day (부부의 날) has only been around since 2007, and I have no idea how many people celebrate the day. There's a link about it in Korean here if you're interested.
Using carnations for Parents' Day does come from Western tradition and, in particular, Christianity. There is a legend that Jesus' mother Mary cried when she saw him suffering on the cross; when the tears fell to the ground they caused carnations to appear -- hence, the association between carnations and mothers. In 1907 the flower was picked to represent Mother's Day in the United States, with white chosen because it was supposed to represent "purity, faithfulness, fragrance, and love
