가스 폭발

오늘밤 우리 집 근처에서 가스 폭발이 있었다.

A loud booming noise came from outside the window as I was finishing my last class this evening, and was immediately followed by a rumbling that could be felt through the floor. Our academy is on the third floor of a five-story building in a residential part of town, which left me wondering what could have caused the disturbance. One of my coworkers thought it was an earthquake, the academy director - who was near the center of the building and couldn't place where the sound had come from - assumed the noise had been from something falling on one of the upper floors, while it reminded me of the artillery tests conducted at an army base not far from my parents' home. It had also been raining throughout the day, but does thunder have enough power to make buildings shake?

Upon leaving the building we noticed a large collection of firetrucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles parked a few blocks up the street. Our van driver was also nowhere to be seen, but she came back moments later and told us that a large gas explosion had taken place nearby. The 20+ story high-rise apartments closest to the explosion lost all their windows to the blast and it wasn't long before our students were receiving calls from their parents to make sure they were alright. I can't imagine what it was like to be in one of those apartments as the gas line blew; I sincerely hope that no one was seriously injured and that the damage to homes can be easily fixed. Our academy director and one of the Korean teachers live with their families in high-rises across the street from our hagwon, so, while I know it's selfish to say this, I'm glad it didn't happen there instead.
