Her mouth was filled with blood. The major could taste it; a bitter irony taste that refused to be swallowed. The stench of blood met her nostrils; it was everywhere, surrounding her.
Sam desperately tried to open her eyes but the thick mask of blood and damaged flesh denied her even this.
All she could see was darkness.
All she could smell and taste was her own blood.
She could hear the attack continuing- Janet was beaten mercilessly in the same way she had been.
Sam lay still, her body bruised and broken; realising this was the bitter taste of defeat.
