Janet took great care unwrapping her birthday presents. She didn't tear the paper, didn't rip the boxes open... She carefully found a loose bit of tape and extracted the gift carefully. "It's a doctor thing," Janet said when they laughed at her. "Remember the care I took next time I open one of you up."
Sam just smiled. She knew the care was only taken with presents.
Her ripped blouses, jeans with their buttons popped off and her shredded brassieres too many to count revealed the truth.
When Janet was really eager for the gift, the wrapping paid the price.

The massive Ori ship surged forward, taking its first steps into this galaxy.
The battle was fierce, but hopelessly one-sided. As the Ori continued on, sweeping past their battlements like a giant swatting flies, Sam saw one of their ships destroyed by a beam of light. Cameron was on the Odyssey, Daniel was the Korolev. No matter what else happened today, she'd lost a teammate.
The sky burned with wreckage as the Ori ships continued on their way.
Sam watched in horror, hanging helplessly in the void, the ship's explosion still burning in her eyes. "Alea iacta est," she whispered.

Sam licks her ice cream cone slowly.
Her tongue runs along the slick curve of the chocolate peak, curls into her mouth. She smacks her lips, tilts her head, attacks the chocolate again. She licks her bottom lip and licks again.
"Sam?"
"Yes?"
"Must you finish that now?"
"It's melting," Sam said. "I have to finish it before it melts." She licked again.
"But..."
"Sh."
She bent down again and licked Janet's belly. Janet had ice cream all over her lap. She was dripping wet, but Sam had promised to finish her dessert before she got to eat her dinner.

Sam's right arm was in a cast. She couldn't write, couldn't go on missions. She could barely hold tools to work on constructing some back-logged projects. So she pouted. She ate Jell-O with a wobbly left hand and stewed. Janet had let the members of SG-1 sign the cast and she sometimes read their letters. "Daniel's not as smart as you. Come back soon," was good.
But her favorite was Teal'c's, right under her wrist. In his precise calligraphy-style handwriting, he'd written, "Even porcelain cracks."
It was quite possibly the most beautiful thing she'd ever had written on a cast.
