On champions and gentlemen

Feb 06, 2008 08:58

I have recently seen a beautiful picture as a tribute to a horrid person: http://klem.deviantart.com/art/Last-win-in-Monaco-63978800

In my opinion, drivers who crash other drivers out of races to stop them from getting points, as Senna did to Prost and Schumacher did to Hill, do not deserve the title of Champion. What they do deserve is what Senna eventually got at Imola. The only sadness I felt when Schumacher retired is that I did not get to see the same fate befall him. I felt much more sadness when he equalled, and then eclipsed, the record for most F1 "championships", which had previously held by a gentleman named Fangio. The modern F1 World Driver's Championship does not seem to have any place for gentlemen; not while it's run by people like Adolf Ecclestone and Ernst Stavro Dennis. This is a true shame.

It is said that Dale Earnhart (Sr.) used to do that a lot too, but what can one expect of NASCAR? Besides, Dale Sr. got his as well...

BTW, today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and a public holiday in Jamaica. I'm at home today! Yay!
