I have three pets - two cats and a rabbit, who were all adopted and already had names starting with B. I am making an entry about them because these guys keep me going and I want to write about something positive today (my last post was pretty bleak).
Bootsie ~ Bootsie is a cat who still looks much like a kitten at almost 5 yrs old. She belonged to a family member who said she scratched their baby...although it was later admitted that her scratching the furniture was of more concern. It took her a long time to grow into her coat, with a crazy mane that makes her look like one of those lizards with the webbing around it's neck, or just a barn cat who licked a mushroom. Bootsie doesn't actually bother with me much, but she is integral to the lives of the other pets who are both bonded to her. Surprisingly, Bootsie is sometimes the pet who shows up out of nowhere to keep me company if I'm really down. She is known for leaving felted chunks of fur on the carpet, peeing on clothing if it's left on hard flooring, and will be scratching my furniture for years to come. *Also, Bootsie loves bunnies. Keep reading.
Bruce ~ Bruce was adopted from an animal clinic after three of my bunnies passed away within six months of one another. (One of these was the bun in my profile pic, Clover.) One rabbit died unexpectedly but had chronic health issues as a baby. Another, her mate, passed away when his mourning triggered the return of some eating-related issues he'd had before, which then made it impossible for him to recover from an abscess that developed while he was down. The third bun was simply heart-broken and passed away within a day and a half of the 2nd one, before we could find him a new friend. These bunnies had been Bootsie's little family and playmates/companions. She continued to look for the buns even after their cages had been taken down. Bruce was adopted to keep her company, although she wasn't sure she liked him upon his arrival. Bruce didn't care - he sauntered through the house we lived in, took stock of everything and decided he had it good. He also enjoyed teasing the little girl cat who would fluff up like a pufferfish and make a sound like an electric toothbrush (Bootsie's growl is tiny) whenever he got near her. Now they are good little buddies, although Bruce still like to antagonize her.
Bruce is my buddy, he follows me everywhere and between the three pets is the one who most bestows affection on me, besides just returning it. Bruce gives chimp hugs - he wraps his arms around your neck and clings. He is all white with blue eyes. He was found wandering on Bruce Street, hence his name. The vet told me that he is a diluted version of an orange cat...I am not sure about that. I have also been told that he's part siamese - which is believable because he has the voice of one. I believe him to be more albino than just white cat, as his eyes reflect pink and although there are markings in his fur, I still wouldn't say there is colour to them.
Bobbin ~ Bobbin started out as a foster bunny through a rescue organization. After several months without anybunnies in the house, I decided I was ready to have a rabbit around again. Bobbin was found wandering a suburban area and taken to an animal control. He was un-neutered and I believe that this is why he was put out. When Bobbin first arrived in my care he sprayed the walls around his pen, as well as anyone who got near him - except Bootsie. Bobbin loved Bootsie, which continued even after he was fixed. Bootsie also like to spend time with Bobbin and often sits in his pen with him, sometimes napping together. When Bootsie sleeps in her round cat bed Bobbin sits at the side, his head propped up on the edge to stare at her. Originally Bobbin was adopted out, but returned to my care because the family that had adopted him had improperly tried to bond him to a female and wound up traumatizing both bunnies. I couldn't bare to see him hurt, or to have him leave again, so he was adopted shortly after his return.
Bobbin likes to get up on the bed at certain points during my sleep and nudge his head under my hand until I either pet him or plop my hand on his head and leave it there. Bunnies often sit with their chin on top of another rabbit's head and I think this is what he is looking for. Bobbin is generally litter trained and is free range in my room. I believe he is about 5 or 6 yrs old. He is a Dutch bunny. If you look closely, you can see carrot juice on one of his front feet in the above picture.
I have some really cute pictures of Bootsie and Bobbin on my cell phone, but can't email them to myself and don't have a removeable chip or appropriate cord to get them onto the computer. Aside from the goober in Bruce's eye, I like this picture of the two of them together.
Bruce has a habit which has been very aggravating to me in the past several months - sitting at the apartment door and cryyying - while I'm trying to sleep, or occupied with something other than him. I think this is a three-fold problem: I have been spending a lot of time in bed because my sleep is erratic (although he unknowingly worsens this), he knows that someone on our floor got a cat a few months ago, and he is unsatisfied with the size of the apartment. Using Feliway (an artificial cat pheromone spray) worked for a while in calming him down, but he has become rather immune to it. It is hard for me to stay upset with him for long though. Most of the time he winds up perched on my chest, purring while I try to go back to sleep. I would ignore him but the walls are paper thin here and I don't want the neighbours to complain.
Although I am not in a very good career/scholastic/financial situation at the moment, I am much better off than I would be if I were alone, because I have the company of these wonderful little guys to keep me afloat. I am so glad that I have them.
