crimeland's Thanksgiving challenge. I was very happy to receive honorable mention in the challenge when there were so many talented writers participating!
The turkey and the pumpkin pie she had arranged on the round table as some small compensation for yet another holiday spent on a case and away from family had been cold for hours numbering in the double digits, the deviled eggs were starting to smell, the bullpen had never seemed darker or emptier, and Penelope was thankful.
It seemed like days ago--weeks, maybe--that Hotch's call had been cut short, and what was supposed to be a quickly wrapped-up case left Penelope alone and unable to contact any of her coworkers, her friends, her family. Logically, she knew it hadn't been more than 12 hours since the unsub managed to somehow capture and restrain six of the FBI's finest and make his offer on every national television network.
Penelope liked to think of herself as an optimist, but the chances that all of her teammates would emerge from this unharmed were...almost non-existent, really.
And, well, they hadn't been unharmed. Reid was currently having a cast fitted on the broken arm, the result of their kidnapper realizing that he had managed to undo the cuffs, and Emily would probably have a visible scar across her right cheek for the rest of her life.
Someday Penelope would assure her that it added character and mystery, but it wasn't time for that just yet.
Morgan, bless his beautiful soul, had been the first to contact her. On her computer screen he had looked exhausted and sore, but so damn happy to be alive.
They were alive and free. That shocked, numb feeling she had expected to become a permanent fixture in her life had subsided and she couldn't feel anything but thankful--to the gods or to whoever had taught Spencer Reid to pick locks.
