SO I just watched Doom, that really bad movie with The Rock and Karl Urban (as well as a few other people you might know, like
Rosamund Pike, who frequently looks like Jewel Staite:
She's been in a Bond movie (Die Another Day, the last Brosnan film), in Pride and Prejudice and ... not much else. She's kind of an ice queen, with limited facial expression.
Others you might know are
Richard Brake, known to many for his role as Joe Chill in Batman Begins, or
Al Weaver, who looks like Ryan Cartwright and played the young man interested in Soo Lin in Sherlock's "The Blind Banker".
Despite having Karl Urban in it (never a bad thing!), I didn't really get into the movie. I like dumb action movies/tv shows, but they have to have at least one of these components, and preferably more:
- Strong female lead (c.f. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the Resident: Evil series, Ultraviolet, Underworld and Painkiller Jane)
- Interesting premise (c.f. The Blade series (vampires), the Transformers series (robots from space), The Fifth Element (futuristic science fantasy) and Sherlock Holmes (mystery! action! adventure! RDJ!).)
- GoodGreat music (c.f. especially Transformers or the Pirates of the Caribbean series. See also Tron:Legacy.)
- Witty repartee (c.f. anything Joss has done, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man, or Hot Fuzz)
- Doesn't take itself too seriously (c.f. Fright Night (recent remake), Thor, SG:1 or SGA)
- At least one hot actor (more never hurts) (c.f. Doom (for Karl Urban), Wolverine: Origins (for Hugh Jackman), The A-Team (for Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson), The Chronicles of Riddick and xXx (for Vin Diesel).)
In retrospect, I expect at least one of these of most of the movies I watch!
The more of these a movie has, the more likely I am to like it.
For instance, Star Trek (2009) has an interesting premise (an alternate timeline for TOS? how interesting!), good music (not great, but there are some great cues in the score), witty repartee (thank you Pine/Quinto! and Karl Urban! and Simon Pegg! and .... well the whole movie is practically a "how-to" in writing witty repartee ("Hi, Christopher. My name's Nero.").), doesn't take itself too seriously (lots of nods to TOS and Spock's "Live long and prosper" that sounds either like "GFY" or "DIAF" depending on who you ask), and the whole cast is hot. Really, the whole cast.
If they manage to add an ass-kicking woman in the next movie, it will be the epitome of a good movie (for me).
Also, does anyone else think that Karl Urban and Misha Collins look similar?
Compare:
Misha Collins Karl Urban
Also, the same dude (Nick Willing) who did
Alice and
Tin Man for SyFy is back to do
Neverland. I'm excited!!
AND the good Peter Pan is on Netflix, as is most of the later Bond movies (with Brosnan) as well as earlier Bond (Dr. No, From Russia With Love). Anyone up for a movie fest?
