Summary: Kibum is unsure whether or not he can possibly survive his life long dream, they all are. Everest is hard enough to climb and even harder with a freshly broken heart. But things can change, so can people, and when Kim Kibum is determined, he can do anything.
My feet were aching so badly that I didn’t think it was possible for me to take another step, and yet I did, letting my crampons sink into the eight-foot-deep snow beneath me. I sucked in another breath of cold air and looked up at the trail people climbing above me, Minho was currently a few feet behind the Sherpa that would hopefully lead us to the summit of Mount Everest, Jonghyun behind him, followed closely by Lee Jinki- my ex-boyfriend. I struggled to turn around, getting a quick glance at the boy behind me. His name was Lee Taemin, and I couldn’t help but think he was a little young to be attempting what we all currently were.
I shouldn’t be judging him though, seeing as this had been my dream ever since I was five years old. He was just another person trying to accomplish his dream, we all were. The poor kid was struggling with the acclimation process, adapting to the lack of oxygen slower than the rest of us climbers. I had requested several times that we slow down so that he would be able to adapt better, but the Sherpa had insisted we move forward or be at risk of getting stuck in bad weather. And since none of us wanted that, we pushed forward despite the youngest’s troubles.
I prayed that he (or any of us for that matter) wouldn’t become afflicted with HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) because that could potentially kill the kid, especially if he didn’t tell us he wasn’t feeling well. And he seemed like the type to cover that up, because depending on how bad it got, we might have to stop him wherever he was on the mountain and take him back down to the base camp. I doubt he wanted that to happen. None of us did.
I looked back up at Minho, who was now even closer to the Sherpa than before and still going strong. He was defiantly the strongest out of all of us, and the most likely to survive. But we don’t get to choose who lives and who dies on Everest, the mountain itself does, and any one of us could be the next to go.
