I stuffed another article of clothing in the duffle bag currently sitting on my bed, trying to fit as much as I possibly could into it. I fought with the zipper for a couple seconds before giving up and pulling a bungee cord out from the plastic container underneath my bed. After wrapping the cord around the bag several times and struggling to fasten it, I flung myself onto the bed with a sigh. I was exhausted, the training I had been going through the past week was really starting to take its toll on me. For the past couple of weeks our training had intensified, the reason unknown. Several soldiers dropped out when it got too rough, but I couldn’t allow myself to do that.
I guess you could say my hard work paid off. The reason they increased the difficulty of our training was to decide who would go to Gefrorenberge, a German prison hidden deep in the mountains. I frowned, still wondering why the prison was hidden in the first place. What was there that people shouldn’t know about? I was chosen; apparently I was supposed to guard something there. No details were given, so I eagerly awaited my departure that was only a couple hours away. I ran my hands through my tangled hair, wishing that I wasn’t as curious as I was. They had tried to make it sound better than it actually was; when in reality the only good part about it was the pay raise. Those mountains were freezing, hence the name Gefrorenberge. The name separated (gefroren berge) literally meant ‘frozen mountains’ and considering I don’t like cold weather, it wasn’t going to be a fun place to stay. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted when several soldiers burst in the room, the door flying from its hinge, their guns pointed at me.
“You! On the ground!” I didn’t listen, my hand wandering dangerously close to the gun tucked into the back of my pocket. I had a naturally rebellious nature, so even though it wouldn’t be smart for me to try and shoot the four men standing there with guns four times bigger than mine, the thought still popped into my brain. “On the ground!” I fought my instinct and reluctantly obeyed, dropping to the ground. Any normal person would be trembling and about to piss themselves if they were in my current position, but I was a trained soldier and perfectly calm. That is, until one of the men walked over to me and pointed their gun right at my head. That would freak anyone out, soldier or not.
“Are you Lee Jinki?” I nodded, afraid that if I spoke my head would be gone two seconds later. The man’s foot pressed harder on my back and he spoke again, “hand over your ID.” I did as he asked and held out my ID, hand trembling. He snatched it, nodding his head while reading. I gulped, what did they want? The man exchanged a couple hushed words with the one next to him before he spoke, “Your coming with us, Gefrorenberge requested you come immediately.” I let out a sigh of relief and nodded, at least they didn’t want me dead. I then grabbed my duffle bag and followed them out.
It took us a couple of hours to get to the airport and when we arrived they informed me it would be a few more hours until the plane landed, then an hour drive to Gefrorenberge. In other words, I wouldn’t be getting there anytime soon. While walking through the airport I noticed several other soldiers, I didn’t bother to talk to them though. I didn’t like any of the other soldiers I knew. After my journey through the airport I filed onto the plane along with others, stuffed my bag in the overhead compartment and sat down. I laughed internally; it was a miracle I even made it through the airport. Airports were danger zones for clumsy people like me, I wasn’t clumsy when it came to handling a gun, killing people, and fighting to stay alive. When it came to everyday things like walking though, it was a fight to stay alive. I closed my eyes, waiting for sweet, sweet, sleep to come.
“Excuse me?” I opened one eye; it was some fat guy.
“Yes?” I replied, hoping he would notice how annoyed I was that he had interrupted my sleep.
“Oh, hey! I was just wondering whether or not you were awake!” I think my eye might have twitched a little at that. He just smiled at me; this guy obviously couldn’t take a hint. That’s when I noticed he had an army uniform on; I raised an eyebrow.
“You in the army too?” He nodded,
“You betcha! I’m Shindong, what’s your name?” I paused, debating whether or not to tell this guy my name. After a couple seconds I decided he was harmless enough and answered him.
“Lee Jinki.” His smile faltered a bit at that, I don’t think he was expecting me to be as formal as I was. He smiled again,
“Well that’s a nice name! Want to be friends?”
“Thanks.” I didn’t answer the second question, this guy’s constant smiling was creeping me out. He was just a little too jolly for me to handle. That didn’t stop him though, much to my displeasure.
“Where are you headed?”
“Nowhere.”
“Oh. Gefrorenberge, then?” I grabbed him arm and covered his mouth with my hand. Was this guy some kind of idiot? Who the hell goes around spewing out military secrets like that?
“Shut up. That’s some top secret shit you’re shouting out to the world.” The guy… Shindong? I think that was his name looks at me and frowns,
“I knew that’s where you were going, there’s nobody dangerous here anyway. I checked everyone’s file here before getting on this plane… Nobody knows about Gefrorenberge.” I was starting to hate this guy even more with every second.
“You can never be too careful.”
“True, very true.” He replied, smiling and nodding. He didn’t speak after our little introduction, so I leaned my head back and tried to sleep once again.

“Sir? Excuse me, sir?” I groaned and rubbed my eyes, clearing away the crust that had formed. It was the flight attendant. Noticing that she was about to poke me, I grabbed her wrist and roughly pushed her hand away. I was not a morning person, especially when its some slut pressing her boobs together and leaning over me like this woman currently was. She stepped back and pouted, massaging her wrist, “That hurt.” I smirked, good. I stood up and shoved her aside, grabbing my things from the overhead compartment and walking away. She wasn’t the first.
As I was navigating through the second airport that day, my thoughts wandered back to the man I had met on the plane. Shindong. I frowned, why would he talk to me so cheerfully like that… then leave without a word? I sighed; he did say he was going to Gefrorenberge, so I would probably see him at some other point in time. I scanned the area for anyone that might be around to pick me up; they hadn’t given me any details about who that might be. I smirked; maybe they’d have a giant sign. Pick up for secret prison Gefrorenberge here! That’s when I spotted the men standing near the exit, very, very, burly men… Burly men that were obviously looking for something. I bit my lip; well, it’s worth a shot.
I ran up to the group, ID out in front of me. The men saw it and nodded, pointing at a jeep parked at the entrance. I then slipped my ID away in my back pocket and walked up to the jeep, opening the back door and hopping in the back seat. God dammit. It was that Shindong guy. I looked at the floor, praying he wouldn’t recognize me. He did though, of course.
“Hey Jinki!”
“Hey Shindong.” I replied through my teeth angrily, this day just got ten times worse. I dig my nails into my thigh when I see two more people approach our car… Did I say ten times worse? My mistake, I meant twenty. One is tall and gangly; while the other is so adorable it makes me want to puke up rainbows and butterflies. The adorable one decides to squeeze in next to me and the other slides in the passenger seat. He gives me a cute little wave and starts chattering away with Shindong, whose fat rolls are currently squished up against my side.
“Hey, I’m Shindong!”
“I’m Taemin, nice to meet you!” He pauses, “Oh, and the guy in the front is Minho!” He says, a smile from ear to ear. I flinch, already knowing exactly what’s coming.
“Nice to meet you too! The grumpy guy sitting next to you is Jinki.” Taemin turns to me, still smiling, and thrusts out his hand. I didn’t shake it; I didn’t need to catch his cuteness. Taemin pouts a little before returning his hand to his pocket and turning back to Shindong. I was really starting to like the guy in the front, you know, the quiet one. The jeep suddenly pulled to a stop, causing me to jerk forward a little bit and Shindong to fall on top of me. His weight was making me suffocate while breaking several of my bones at the same time, so I shoved him off of me and flung the door open, pushing Taemin aside and jumping out of the torture chamber. The rest filed out after me. I stood as far away as I could get away with from the others, cursing at the fact we’d probably be going to the same place. I was incorrect. The man who was driving grabbed my arm and led me away from Shindong and the others, who were being led in the opposite direction by several soldiers. There were two buildings and it looked like I’d be going in one and they’d be going in the other.
“You won’t be going with them,” he says gruffly tightening his grip on my arm, like I was going to run after them. I tore my arm from his grip and replied,
“Lead the way.” I followed him as he walked towards the building on the right, which looked a little small to be a prison in my opinion. It wasn’t tall, had the architecture of a box, and looked as though it might’ve been around for at least one hundred years. I guess the guy noticed me staring because he said, “It’s the most secure prison in the world, don’t underestimate it.” I raised an eyebrow and nodded. Then followed him through the door at the front, which looked pretty normal on the outside, but the guy had to scan his ID card, give his thumbprint, and punch in a code to get the door to open.
The hallway was dark and there were several different passageways leading off from the main one, we went down the third one. I decided I might come back and explore later because we hadn’t gone very far. The hallway we went down had a door at the end, similar to the door at the entrance to the building. The man went through the same routine before the door clicked, then swung open. I walked into the room after the soldier, across the room was something you might describe as a throne. The man sitting in it had a very defined jaw line and broad shoulders; some might say he was handsome. Beside him was a very beautiful woman; I’m assuming its spouse or girlfriend. They were both staring at me and it was making me slightly uncomfortable, especially the woman’s stare. It was the look an animal gives their prey. The soldier beside me bowed and I did the same, when I looked back up they were both still staring at me. The man sitting on the throne then suddenly spoke, breaking the uncomfortable silence that filled the room,
“Lee Jinki, I presume?” The soldier nodded,
“Yes sir.”
“You may leave then.” He said, waving his hand in the direction of the door. The soldier bowed again and obeyed, opening the door and walking out. I frowned, the atmosphere was really creepy, I was starting to get the feeling that this was no normal prison. It was unlike any other prison I had been in before. “So you’re Lee Jinki.” I jumped when he spoke, but then nodded in response. “I am… Kim Jonghyun. To you I am sir, I assure you that if you call me by my name, punishment will ensue.” He said, sneering at me. I was seriously beginning to hate this guy, maybe even more than Shindong and the rest of the gang.
“Yes… sir.” Jonghyun frowned, obviously noticing the sarcasm dripping from my words. He then spoke again, gesturing towards the woman next to him.
“This beautiful woman here is my fiancé, Shin Se Kyung. As you might have already guessed, you will not be calling her that. You will call her Mistress Se Kyung.” I smirked, well that didn’t sound sexual at all. Jonghyun obviously noticed that I thought that was funny and he smiled, but it wasn’t a genuine smile. It was the kind of smile you give to someone you despise, but you’re forced to act nice to them. “Why don’t we tell you a little about your assignment? Hm?”
“Yes sir.” I replied, no sarcasm this time. I actually wanted to know what I would be doing while I was stuck in this hellhole.
“You will be guarding someone, someone special. He is extremely dangerous so we’ve gathered all the best soldiers from several different bases; you’re the one we decided would be the best… fit. This someone is no normal person… they are not even a person. It doesn’t matter whether or not you believe me when I say this, but this someone is a demon, Lee Jinki.” I guess must have looked confused, because he continued to explain. “The demon’s name is Kim Kibum, we do not know as much as we would like to know about this… creature, but we do know just how dangerous it is. Every single awful event that has ever happened on this earth that couldn’t be explained was a demon’s doing. We were forced to capture Kim Kibum due to the fact he was going to marry the demon king Sungmin. If we allowed that to happen, two very powerful forces would combine and eventually destroy the world. As long as we have Kim Kibum, the world is safe. That is why we need a very powerful soldier to guard Kim Kibum, someone whom he won’t be able to mess with, someone who won’t get themselves killed.” I’m not sure I really believed this, but you know, whatever. As long as I got that pay raise, I didn’t really care.
Jonghyun stood up from his ‘throne’ and looked at me, gesturing to Se Kyung to stay where she was. I followed him when he unlocked the door and walked into the dark hallway, going farther down the tunnel than I had gone with the soldier. When we reached the end of the hallway I almost gasped, it might’ve been the largest door I had ever seen in my life, with dozens of things installed for security. You name it; it had it. Jonghyun walked through it all with no problem; nothing blew up in his face and no trap doors opened. I hesitated, giving Jonghyun a slightly worried glance.
“I had inner security lifted from the outside so that we could get in with no problem.” He said, smirking. Did I mention how much I really disliked this man? I frowned and followed him, almost running into him when he suddenly stopped. I peeked out from behind him, eyes widening at the sight in front of me. There was a giant metal box with a small window in the center; I couldn’t see anything through the window, just darkness. Jonghyun looked at me expectantly and I gave him a confused look,
“You want me to go inside that thing?” Hey nodded, still smirking. I bit my lip and walked across the room towards the ‘cage’, praying that nothing will blow up in my face. I turned around; Jonghyun was gone. I continued to walk until I reached the metal box and set my hand on the scanner, flinching and stepping back when there was a loud click. I stared as the front of the metal box began peeling away, until there was nothing there. The second I stepped inside, the wall shot back up again and I walked further into the darkness.
“H-help me!” I turned, there was a soldier crawling towards me. I ran to him and grabbed his hand, helping him up and letting him lean on me.
“Are you okay?” I immediately asked, letting him catch his breath before he answered.
“It’s a monster! Leave… leave!” Before I could respond, he ran from me and flashed his ID at the scanner, trying to escape. In his rush to escape, he forgot several of the steps. I watched as the floor lit up under the man’s feet and stepped back as a rush of heat hit me, emitting from the floor. The man’s screams echoed inside the metal prison as he collapsed onto the burning hot floor, making it sear his skin and eventually causing it melt. “Help me!” He screamed, becoming quiet a couple seconds later. Dead. The first door then closed, causing his body to disappear from view.
This is much more serious than I originally thought it was.
I turned away and walked deeper into the ‘cage’ until I reached the point where I couldn’t go any farther, a real cage. Metal bars and all, like a prison cell. I looked inside and gasped, there sat the most beautiful man I had ever seen.
“Hello… Lee Jinki.”
A/N: This is a new idea I’m toying with, hope you liked it. The next one will involve more of Key. Thanks for reading! Please comment ☺
