Christmas 2008 was, on the whole, a success. Everyone seemed to like most, if not all, of their presents (the home-made scarves, in particular, went down a treat), Christmas dinner was delicious and more or less as planned, and although I did get pretty tired I had enough energy for all the important bits. I have several new books to read, various useful and/or decorative things for around the house, and a sewing machine and some crochet supplies to play with. I'll be posting recipes and reminders for next year over the next week or so, so that I know where they are.

2009 seems to be, so far, a somewhat smellier year than 2008. Cleo developed cystitis when I was away for three days between Christmas and New Year, then the medication the vet prescribed upset her stomach, so I've been doing rather more in the way of cleaning smelly substances out of carpets, blankets, cat beds, and so on than I really want to. Despite my best efforts, one room and the waterproof mattress protector I had the forethought to put over the one bed she could get at still smell rather distressing. I may have to replace the mattress protector but I'm not sure what to do about the room, other than taking everything movable out and sniffing it then having another go at the carpet. In the meantime this is taking all the energy and drying space that I'd ideally be using on washing my own clothes, so a heroic effort will have to be made this evening to ensure that I have clean socks.
