For various reasons that don't need to be explored at this juncture, I decided to have my own little action movie fest this weekend.
Friday night was
I had figured Pacific Rim was one of those movies that could go either way and be either really cheesy or really awesome. Thankfully, it was the latter. Granted, it was done by Guillermo Del Toro, so you know the chances of it being good are quite high.
I enjoyed the mythology and world-building that was done for the Kaiju and the Jaegers, as well as the look of them. Idris Elba as the head of the Jaeger program was awesome ("Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!"). And Burn Gorman, Owen from Torchwood, was in it and very awesome.
And the whole idea about Drifting was pretty awesome too. And I liked how it showed that the two Jaeger pilots didn't have to be almost the same for it to work, because Mako and Raleigh were quite different (gender, nationality, body build) and yet it still worked. Which makes me curious about the psychology behind it.
Now I want a movie going into the height of the Jaeger-Kaiju war where we get to see more of the epic battles and the Jaeger teams going out afterwardsd to celebrate or mourn. I think it would be awesome.
On Saturday, I saw
And R.I.P.D. was just as silly and cheesy as I had expected, and I'm okay with that. I was looking for something on the lighter side and definitely found it. And Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds are both awesome. I did like the premise - undead lawmen going after "deados" who have escaped judgment and are living on Earth. And, like Dead Like Me, they don't look like themselves for obvious reasons. So from time to time, we'll see Ryan Reynolds' new "body" - an older Chinese gentleman and Jeff Bridges' - a hot woman. One of my favorite moments is when a guy sees Roy's (Jeff Bridges) "avatar" and wants her for a music video and Roy - who was a lawman in the 1800s and looks the part, long hair and "Buffalo Bill" Cody facial hair to match - goes off on a rant about how s/he is a woman and not a piece of meat.
And today was a double feature of Captain America and The Avengers - which we all know are awesome.
