There was no magic on or off switch to rid her of the pain, pain that filled the woman's veins. Consuming her from within. Sam sat in the locker room, tears streaming from her face. Guilt filling every bone in her body. A mission gone wrong. It had happened before; there had been injuries, sometimes even fatalities. Never before had Sam had to drag a team member away from the pale lifeless body of her best friend. Leaving her there. No decent burial, no chance for their daughter to say goodbye. Sam gave in to another wave of tears, knowing the pain would not fade any time soon.

No one blamed him. No one had come out and said "Daniel it's your fault." Deep inside of him in the pit of his stomach, he knew it was his fault. He wanted someone to scream at him, to blame him, to make the loss easier to deal with. He had the gun. The weapon, the defence. He didn't protect her. He should have been protecting her. If anyone should have died out there, it should have been him. Janet was not in a position to harm anyone. He had the weapon, he was the threat, and he was the one they were aiming at.

Jack never liked the infirmary. It had never been one of the more inviting places on the base. It was less so now. Jack still felt like he hadn't awoken from a bad dream, a nightmare following him from a dream world into reality. This should never have happened; Wells shouldn't have been injured on such a simple mission. Janet should never have gone into the field. Any other trained medic could have got Wells out of there, though Jack doubted anyone else could have saved him. But at what cost? What had they gained by saving Wells? What had they lost?

An officer
A Doctor
A friend
A mother

It was the right decision.
We do not leave our people behind.

The officers of this facility are well aware of the dangers waiting beyond the gate. They wanted to go. They wanted to attempt a rescue. If it were them, trapped there, they would have wanted others to volunteer to save them. Others would. It doesn't make it any easier. The hardest part is remaining in control, I can't break down, and I can't show emotion.

The phone call has to be made. Sam want's to do it but I get that responsibility, as the man who gave Janet Fraiser her orders, I get to tell Cassandra her mother died in battle.

There was no magic on or off switch to rid her of the pain, pain that filled the woman's veins.

Consuming her from within.

It lasted a second; to Janet it was a lifetime. The end of a lifetime.

Amidst the sea of pain Janet could hear the noise filling the air, gunfire, Daniel's frantic calls.

Panic stricken calls for help.

Janet wanted to cry out, to have him hold her before… before the end finally came.

Darkness enclosing her, the pain finally beginning to numb.

Death finally taking her away, away from the pain and helplessness, away from those who loved her.
