Tommy is now actually reading. Like, practically overnight he started reading real, actual books. He obviously still needs help with a lot of words, but he knows a lot by sight already - ones that I didn't know he knew. Holy crap. At first I thought maybe he was simply remembering things I'd read to him before, but now he is reading books that we've never read before.
I shouldn't be too surprised - Kevin read at three and I read at four, so early reading appears to be genetic or something, for Tommy. Of course, we've read to him every day since he was born, and he sees us (OK, me) reading a lot as well. And he's had the mad verbal skillz since very early, so he's clearly inclined that way. But there's a difference between knowing the alphabet and even recognizing a couple of words, and reading sentences. I'm not sure how much comprehension there is of the actual story yet, but I know that will come. I'm still just flabbergasted that this seems to have happened, as I said, almost literally overnight.
I really want him to love reading. I can't really remember not being able to read, and I loved it as soon as I learned. Kevin was unfortunately put on display by his nursery school teachers and because he is stubborn, he quit reading for pleasure and never liked it (still doesn't). I can't say I blame him, but I really don't want that to happen to Tommy. I want him to love reading for fun and to know that whenever he wants to learn about something, he can find whatever he wants to know from books.
I can't wait for him to be old enough to read some of the books I loved as a child. He already loves the Berenstain Bears and Curious George, and of course, anything Thomas the Tank Engine related. I'm planning to get him some more beginner level books that he can easily read on his own. I see this whole huge world opening up for him, and I'm the one who's totally excited!
