Sentenced to Rape and Imminent Death

"While this practice is condemned as barbaric by modern societies, some societies punish the victims of rape as well as the perpetrators. According to such cultures, being raped dishonors the victim and, in some cases, the victim's family. In Middle Eastern societies, rape victims may be killed in "honor killings" to "restore" a family's name."

"Though modern societies recognize the practice as barbaric, some cultures use rape itself as a form of punishment. Usually, the victim of the rape is a female relative of the person targeted for retaliation.
In June of 2002, a Pakistani woman named Mukhtaran Bibi was gang-raped by a vigilante mob after her brother was (falsely) accused of rape himself. The Pakistani government-along with local religious officials-condemned this action and sentenced the rapists to death."

Some cultures still sentence women to rape. This is disgusting a fact enough, but it doesn’t stop there as far as I’m concerned. What really makes me twitch to be on the same planet as the offenders is the fact that they even began this practice in the first place.

Yes, they probably have something in their religion that states that a woman can be sentenced to rape for the crimes of her relative, but that should not protect the deed. In this country, the Supreme Court says that you can not perform an illegal action simply because it is part of your religion/culture, etc. I don't know where in fact this law is also in place, but it's my own personal opinion that it should be in effect for the entire world. Rape is a cruel and demeaning punishment, especially when the woman being sentenced was not the one who had committed the crime.

The second problem I have w/ the ways certain countries deal w/ rape is the fact that so many innocent women who have survived rape and come through the ordeal are later dealt the blow of being responsible for bringing "shame" upon their family. While Mukhtaran Bibi was strong, bringing her rapers to the fate of the death penalty, other women are ashamed of dishonoring their families and commit suicide. Still others are consentually or nonconsentually killed by their families in "honor killings." No woman should feel that, after being raped, she must rid her family of the shame she "caused them," especially because this so-called "shame" should not exist.

These women were raped.

What do you want from them?
