Always the shoes. It’s always the shoes. They’re nothing but trouble. The Doctor’s seen it before. But no, no, Donna never listens when he actually has good advice, does she? And he often has good advice! He doesn’t see what was wrong with her usual shoes. She just had to go dig those ones out of the wardrobe.
“They look good with these pants,” Donna argues, hands on her hips. It’s an oddly familiar gesture, especially in those shoes. “I’m not meeting the Queen of Xanthra-”
“Xanthera,” the Doctor interjects, which only earns him a pointed glare. “What? That’s the planet’s name!”
“Xanthera.” Donna frowns, pausing. “Oi, I lost my train of thought. Point is I’m not meeting royalty in trainers.” She displays the shoes in question proudly. “These are perfect, though. A bit posh but they’re comfortable enough.”
“Donna, I’m just saying that those shoes have a history.” He has to be careful. Trying to get Donna to change her mind on shoes is like trying to get a Slitheen to kindly find other methods of gas dispersal. And without them clawing at you. He’s lucky Donna doesn’t have claws, actually. “They’re just impractical! Those heels are outlawed on some planets.”
Donna of the impractical shoes asks a practical question. “Are they outlawed on this one?”
“Yes.” Except he knows he answered too quickly when Donna rolls her eyes.
“You great big liar.”
“Donna! Really, those aren’t proper shoes.”
“They’re perfect shoes for meeting a queen.” Donna links their arms with a grin. “Now come on, spaceman. I found a suit in your wardrobe. It’ll be perfect.”
“It’s not black, is it?” the Doctor asks, already knowing the answer as Donna drags him off.
Two hours later, Donna is dangling off a cliff’s edge. It’s so familiar the Doctor wonders if he’s being slammed by some sort of foreshadowing hammer. History really could stop repeating with him. He lowers a rope for her and once she’s safe on land, he gives her a very serious look.
“That happened last time someone wore those.”
“It wasn’t the heels!” Donna protests. “That alien pushed me!”
“They always say that,” the Doctor sighs and eyes Donna’s feet. “It’s always the shoes.”
Note: I blame this one marathoning the Key to Time serials. Romana's shoe adventures were too much fun. I personally love her Androids of Tara outfit
