So E's dance school swept the awards at the dance competition tonight. Terribly thrilling.
E's number got best in show for the younger half of the competition, so the kids all went out feeling damn proud of themselves. It was thrilling, thrilling. To be part of a winning team ... well, you get to celebrate even if you didn't do anything yourself but show up, spend money, be on time.
I am reminded of that great Muriel Spark story, "The Ormolu Clock," that ends with the line "everyone wants to be on the winning side." Of course, the winning side in that story is a stand-in for the Nazis.
