Kirk’s internal clock immediately told him it was not time to actually wake up, yet for some unknown reason he had definitely done so. His eyes opened, staring into the darkness of his quarters, wondering why exactly. It was still dark in the room, and he sensed no creeping shadows outside of his bed. No flashing colors and warnings that an alert had been called. Not a sound to disturb him, and he was tucked in nice and warm.

A glance to the chronometer nearby told him he still had five hours until he was supposed to be actually awake. At least their latest shore leave had not completely ruined his ship-run internal clock. As it was, whenever they went on shore leave, he could not sleep once the sun had risen unless he had completely blocked the windows - a weird side effect to spending almost all of one’s time on a ship in the middle of very sunless space.

No matter, though. He knew he could just close his eyes and let himself drift back into sleep. He started to do so, actually sinking back into that warm-fuzzy place between waking and sleeping, but something stirred him out of it. It actually took him a few very confused moments to figure out what had done so, but when he realized, it made him sit up in bed and look to his side.

Spock was still asleep at his side, which was telling of how early it still was. Vulcans, he knew, needed less sleep then humans and Kirk found himself waking up to Spock reading quite often. Also, just as often, Spock leisurely and mostly unconsciously running his fingers across Kirk’s skin. Kirk licked his dry lips, and-

“Shit.” He whispered to himself. He finally realized what exactly was keeping him up. Spock was on the appropriate side of the bed, not even facing him, but the Vulcan was without a doubt shivering.

The whole bedroom temperature thing was an on going debate. Spock’s quarters were drier, hotter, and general made for Kirk having a poor night of sleep because he would sweat to death between the higher temperature and Spock’s own naturally hotter body. In Kirk’s quarters, the temperature was generally set by the computer, though Kirk had urged it a few degrees hotter. Humans tended to fall asleep better when they were colder, and Kirk was no exception.

And now the hot-blooded Vulcan at his side was shivering.

Kirk sighed a little bit and slowly unwound himself from the covers. Another topic of debate between them… something Kirk had known but tried to deny. He was a cover-hog. He would start off just fine… and then wake up as a cocoon. Unfortunately, this little habit had always pissed off his bedmates. He could not just leave Spock to shiver like some freezing rabbit.

He tromped across his room, opened a closet, and pulled out another comforter. In the darkness, he slipped back across the room hampered by the weight of the thick cloth (stubbing his toe in the process), then carefully arranged the comforter around Spock. Only when that was accomplished did he call out very quietly for the temperature to be raised ten degrees and crawl back into bed himself.

He smiled a little as he felt Spock stop shivering, and let himself finally go back to sleep.
