Harry Potter fanfic recommendations-Part 1

Jun 15, 2011 09:34

A few years ago I read my first Harry Potter fanfiction story and was completely mesmerized. Since then, I have read many fantastic stories and I figured it was about time I created a solid recommendation list since I’m constantly sharing these stories via email with people who might be open to an expansion of Harry’s world. So I will share my favorites over a few posts.

Almost all of my recommendations are stories that pair Harry and Draco. Their relationship was always so intense and bordered on obsession, and that makes for wonderfully turbulent situations and hot passion. All of my recs are complete stories. I'd read every one of these again and again.

Most of the stories I like best are set in post-war time, as canon EWE (epilogue? What epilogue?) so, in other words, ignoring the epilogue at the end of Deathly Hallows, it very well could have happened.

This first story though, is not. It is a re-imagining of Deathly Hallows and it is exceptional.

Dirty Business (though I still have no clue why this is the title and probably wouldn't have read it based on that alone if it weren't
for a great rec from a dear friend!)

This HP story isan alternate ending to Deathly Hallows...I seriously almost like it as much which is completely insane! It’s dark and scary and the author adds entirely new spells and adventures creating a whole different journey than the final book. The author is a genius at capturing the “voices” of canon characters, especially Voldemort. I love the very slow and believable progress in harry and draco trusting eachother...you
will NOT regret reading this one!

Reparations and Foundations by Sara’s Girl
One of my very favorites and The Fic By Which Most Fics Are Judged, according to many of my like-minded reader friends. It’s an absolutely wonderful story about Harry's experience in Healer training (kind of like a residency after an MD program) where he will encounter a rather stuffy Draco when he does a rotation in a department where Draco is the Director. It is lovely, with a nice build up of tension before the ice breaks between the boys, and some heroics ensue. It has a sequel, called Foundations. I HIGHLY recommend them both.  Sara’s Girl has a brilliant writing style that is uniquely her own and just reading it has made me into a better writer. Her choices of word use are exceptional and stunning.

On a Clear Day

This is shorter story from the same author if you want something shorter to start you off. It's a lovely story also set in Post-war time about a Harry who has become quite the hermit and Draco who is working hard to build back a good reputation in the community and must get Harry’s help:

Kissed a Boy in London Town

Post-war Draco is trying to keep his family afloat by secretly working as a rentboy (prostitute) when he finds himself with a familiar client. This one is really good and interesting, a bit angsty but with a very satisfying ending. Also on the shorter side.

Must Love Quidditch by Dracosoftie

This is a fun little story about how Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter end up on an anonymous dating site and develop a close relationship without knowing who they are falling in love with. Secrets are kept, friends get involved, hijinx ensue. Fairly lighthearted, romantic, sweet, fun. Sexy but not really smutty.

Paradigm by Cheryl Dyson

Harry is thrown for a loop when, in his job as an Auror, he comes across Draco Malfoy who is a key to one of his investigations. He is shocked to find that Draco has been supporting himself by prostituting himself-but he has a mysterious secret and Harry becomes fascinated with him. Sweet story with magical twists and turns and a happy ending. Pretty smutty.
