Our story begins in modern day Reial, five hundred years since the continent was first raised. While airships fill the skies, three ships claim dominance: The powerful Victoria II of Ivona, the speedy pirate ship the 4423 from Vohemar, and the Winding Way, a theater ship that claimed its alliance was tied to the poor and not to any country. It is through these three ships that the story unfolds.

Both the Victoria II and the Winding Way found themselves in Bellcius for Ivonian Unification Day, a day meant to celebrate Ivona's glory and power. The Winding Way performed a play entitled Gunning for the Rose, a gripping romance tragedy which captivated its audience. Such captivation was needed for the Winding Way to complete its other "performance," stealing from the rich Ivonians who attended the play. They entered the house of a noble and made away with many goods which were loaded onto the ship to be taken to Reial's poor, after taking a cut for themselves. An after party was put on in celebration of their efforts, and many of the crew became liberally drunk, as is fitting of pirates.

Much grumbling ensued amongst the crew of the Victoria II, who was required to attend the various ceremonies set up by the country's officials. Most notable of these was the parade, the final event of the holiday. As chance would have it the ship's captain, Admiral von Karma, became ill of heat stroke and collapsed during the parade, further delaying the ship's departure.

While in Bellcius, many of the crew from both ships enjoyed a night out at the pub to play a little drinking game, which ended on a somewhat sour note for some of its participants.

The 4423 had spent this time in Trewe. As the captain spent her time negotiating selling the loot from their last raid, the crew participated in Vohemar's unique unofficial holiday, "Anti-Ivonian Unification Day." Free beer was offered to all and some of the crew found themselves with hangovers the next day. This lighthearted atmosphere was soon broken, however, as Captain Isako ordered the immediate departure of the ship for a raid.

Banking on the delay caused by the Ivonian Unification Day and the collapse of the Victoria II's captain, Captain Isako led her crew into a risky raid on an Ivonian merchant ship. The ship was knocked into the Badlands and two teams were sent to raid the ship. The crew who opted to stay behind were soon met with a shock as a stowaway was discovered. The captain and first mate were less than pleased, but there was little time to deal with him while the raid was being conducted.

For the most part the raid went as planned. However, an accidental leak on the journal network was caught by the Victoria II's captain, who had now recovered from his heat stroke. Using his crew he probed into the matter and soon found the 4423 to be the cause of the raid. The Victoria II now had its sights set on finding the location of the downed merchant ship and with it the 4423. Smaller military ships combed the area, looking for the ship and any survivors, as well as casualties.

This leak did not go unnoticed by the 4423's captain, either. Infuriated already by the stowaway, she announced an immediate retreat to Colvus to talk with her benefactor, the city's mayor, intending to take the culprit behind the leak with her. The Victoria II and the 4423 now found themselves in a cat and mouse game, as the Ivonian ship scrambled to find the location of the raid and the Vohemaro ship attempted to leave it as quickly as possible. But the conclusion to that tale is for another time.

Meanwhile, the Winding Way set sail for Claiborne to distribute its goods to the poor. Before that, however, the ship's captain received a special visit from his mother who promptly stole him away, leaving the first mate, Vash Stampede, in charge. A little bewildered himself, he declared that the ship would continue on its course to Claiborne, with a small stop in Abantiare to pick up a favorite treat of his on a promise from a certain passenger. It was unclear when the captain would return, or what mayhem would result in the meantime.

The 4423 limped into Bydan for some minor repairs and restocking, before heading off to Colvus. The captain intended to speak with the city's mayor, Derrick Molina. She brought Naoto along with her, leaving the rest of the crew to their own devices, which many of them soon took advantage of.

Back on the Winday Way, it soon became clear that the captain had made an error in choosing Vash to take charge. Cries of stolen spoons filled the ship along with an array of things being broken, people getting locked out of doors and in doors (quite literally), and various other small mishaps. This all led up to one final, nearly fatal disaster as a huge sky whale was spotted on a course heading straight for the Winding Way! The crew soon began to panic, as no one had any idea of what to do in this situation.

Tony and Carol, two of the few capable of flying on the ship, went out to distract it. Joshua soon took over command, requesting the creation of speakers to blast out a sound to drive away the whale. Eventually the combined efforts of the attacks on the whale and the sound from the newly created speakers drove the whale away and the Way was saved. That is, until the captain finally came back.
