things are coming together

wednesday night julia got home from work kinda early and we carved pumpkins...
it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to carve until I realized how much I needed to do a carving of my favorite threadless design ever... the killing tree.

It took me way too long, I wish I had one of those tiny pumpkin carving saws instead of the steak knife I used for the entire thing but all in all I'm pretty happy.

So, yesterday I did the teaching assisting thing... bunch of slackers.
Afterwards Hileri messaged me out of no where, she was coming to philly and wanted to hang out so I ran to work, fought with security about not having my swipe card, eventually got upstairs, grabbed my stuff from maggie (some bookbinding needles and some d rings I had her pick up for me) made my way to south street, hit up pearl for a few and hil met me there... so good to see old friends.

The girls at pearl looked at me funny when I was asking for leather working tools and waxed thread... one was really amused when she convinced me to buy the sinew thread. sinew, otherwise known as "cat gut" is actually made from pig intestines... its kinda oily but really strong. Also bought some waxed thread of another, non animal, variety

So after a jaunt to Jims Steaks on south and then down to Ikea (bought some wood dye and a new light fixture for my room) Hil dropped me off at home and I started sewing some of the leather I have to test the needles, thread and sewing patterns.

Before doing the actual sewing I decided to use some of the wood dye on the samurai sword holder I had roughed up the day before... it WAS flat black... but it was too flat so I had sanded it down... then it wasnt black enough so I bought the black dye from ikea to match my furniture... did one coat of that, went upstairs and started attacking my new lighting fixture... James came in and helped, after a lot of fighting with screws and wires some squirrel scaring (get the crap out of my cieling jerks) and some other issues as well I now had a newly installed light fixture with no bulbs dim enough to test it out with.

Then we went to the office and started fiddling with the light fixture in there... I had bought a new one for there months ago and since we were doing one may as well...
but no.
the wiring is all sorts of fucked, we left the old light out kept everything off and james is calling the landlord today... bad bad wiring up there.

So we sat by the light of a desklamp, watched dead like me and I finally started sewing the leather on my steampunk goggles.

I got the interior leather wrapping done on one side of the goggles... now I just need to sew the interior on the other side, the nose piece and the straps (including sewing in the d rings) and assemble it all (which will likely be partially done as necessity during sewing)

Then after these are done I have a totally different pair to make.

All in all the 2 pairs of goggles will have cost me something like, I dunno, 20 bucks total. with leftover parts.

pictures will be up some day. maybe.
