Most artists I know sell prints only, but a few of them also are open to selling originals. There are a lot of issues of copyright that potentially come into play when selling originals, mostly by this I mean a lot of buyers have unrealistic expectations of what their 'ownership' of the original of a piece of work really entails. So I suggest making sure you're very familiar with that sort of thing before you make a concrete decision (especially if you plan to sell originals but still want to sell prints of the same work). And make sure potential buyers are also aware of what they are and are not buying by purchasing an original from you.

i'm not sure if i follow what you mean about the buyer's unrealistic expectations of an origional. could you elaborate?

i definately understand it'd be important to be clear if i decided to sell both so i do not upset buyers... perhaps i will stick to one or the other for the sake of avoiding confusion.

Sorry for being unclear! I just mean that they often expect that if they are buying an original, you are never going to sell prints of that piece again. In essence, they think they are buying the ownership and rights to that image. They will also sometimes think this automatically entitles them to use that image however they want, like that they can scan it and use it for their webpage or whatever and do not need to give credit.

Basically just make sure they understand that all they are purchasing is the piece of paper they are holding. Not rights or privelages with it, and certainly not ownership of the image itself, meaning they can't just go around saying it's their work now. Believe it or not, some people DO this sort of thing!

i'd like to avoid upsetting people by selling originals and prints, so i might just stick with prints. i need to find a good place to make copies.

i can't believe people think they literally own the image! that's too funny. sheesh!

It's pretty insane, isn't it? That's why a lot of people just don't sell originals in general.
