Obviously there is the...very very obvious EPIC HISTORICAL CONNECTION that they have going on there, Cleopatra and Caesar, tragic and fucked up and very large-scale and insane and not like anything you really get today, because...that was a whole other time and the world was a different place that produced different kinds of people! So it was interesting that having sort of...well. When Caius and Mina met, they didn't really remember who they were, but at the same time it was like they were really just operating with this thin veneer of the modern and contemporary over people who literally do not belong to this era.
Blah blah tl;dr SEPARATELY ALREADY they were intense and insane, and then they MET, and it was instant, which was...kind of fascinating to me. It interested me how Mina rolled with that straight away and Caius was more like Iii am twenty years her senior, I had a daughter her age, what the fuck am I doing - which ultimately didn't and couldn't have stopped him or her, but it was actually for Caius what first started nagging at parts of himself he could subconsciously ignore until then.
When other parts of him were responding to things he didn't remember or understand yet, he had to look at them, but it was...uh, hard, and confusing, and weird, and in the end it just didn't seem as important as going for it. It's something I really love about them, that they fit, so well and so instantaneously. They've been together for what, maybe a year by now? To see them interact (ignoring, for a moment, Mina's age - yes I'm aware nobody but them actually do that), the natural assumption would be a much longer established relationship. Which it is, actually, so.
I like that they are very good at not being each other's rival; their ambitions work in tandem and so do they, when they have a victory it's shared, they're ruthless and political and dangerous, and they can use basically every single thing that happens to them, but they have such real and genuine adoration for each other, and what they want to do isn't just 100% power for power's sake, they are muuuch bigger than that. All of the Political Pandemic Hellfire club is much much bigger than that.
And they're sort of AT ONCE those much much too big for this world people, and then again they are really connected to the world, it's theirs and they love it and they'll do right by it, even if right happens to be...kind of...scary. And their little domestic moments, like Caius asking where the eff he left his cufflinks or answering Mina's phone for her - they're not CONCEPTS, they're people, human people. Just human people who live life on a different scale from a lot of other people.
