Room 438, Sunday late morning

Dean had kept both animals in his room last night and had made arrangements with Dawn for her to herd Sammy up here today. She'd called earlier, saying that they'd be up in about half an hour and Dean was putting the time to good use

"Sounds like it to me," Dean smirked.

"So what're you going to call him?"

"I don't know," Sam admitted. "He needs a really good name though."

[saltandammo]

"Yeah," Dean agreed, moving to sit on the bed as he watched his brother with the puppy. "I'm sure you'll come up with something great, geekboy."

Sam made a face at Dean for the "geekboy" comment, but it didn't last long, not with the best Christmas present ever wriggling in his arms. He set the puppy down and joined them on the bed, watching him sniff and explore. "Have you picked out a name for your kitten yet?"

Dean glanced over at the kitten who was now sitting up and washing his face. "I was thinking Hunter maybe."

Sam watched the kitten in action for a few moments before snickering. "That's fitting for a member of our family. I suppose you'll know whether or not he's a real hunter when you start finding dead mice on your pillow." Glancing back down at his puppy - and boy, was that his part nice to think about - he asked, "What do you think about the name Scout?"

The puppy yipped. "Sounds like someone approves," Dean observed, chuckling.

"Why wouldn't he?" Dawn asked, scratching the puppy's ears and getting licked. "It's a good name," she said, giggling. "Winchesters, the next generation."

[psychic_wonder]

"They may be smaller, but they totally beat us in the adorable factor." Sam laughed, more than happy to see how well Scout seemed to take to Dawn, and vice versa. "So, you're okay with having a dog in the room? I assume we're not leaving him up here with Dean...?"

"No, I'm not running a menagerie," Dean put in. "I've got enough to deal with with Hunter and Alec. Scout's all yours."

"I never would have thought you guys could be out-adorabled, but you're totally being pwned here." Not that Dawn cared. Scout could have been the ugliest, smelliest, most disobedient dog on the planet and she'd still be happy because Sam was so over the moon. "And yes, silly. I wouldn't have helped if I had problems living with a dog. I've never had one before either--borrowing yours will be fun."

"What kind of borrowing are we talking about here? Because if it's anything involving embarrassing little puppy outfits, I might have to reject your request."

"Wrong Summers sister." Dawn gave him a look. "Who puts a Shepherd in an outfit? This is a dog, Sam. Geez, you might offend his delicate little puppy sensibilities. Outfits, feh."

Sam laughed and grinned broadly at Dawn. "Did you hear that?" he said to Scout, giving him another scratch behind the ears. "Dawn is going to keep you safe from crazy people who want to dress you up just like I will."

"Yeah, they'll keep you safe from the mobs of roving puppy fashion designers," Dean said dryly, reaching out a hand to scratch behind Hunter's ears. A few seconds later a loud purr filled the room.
