Some dive bar, Little Rock, Arkansas, Tuesday night

Dean leaned back against the wall and watched as Alec took his turn. He was always appreciative of Alec when he watched him play, even when they were playing each other. When they, like now, were hustling a couple of guys who had too much drink and too much money for their own good, it was even better because he could just appreciate it all without ( Read more... )

Alec's grin was blinding, both cheerful and smug, and he straightened from his shot to turn it from Dean to the two wannabe bikers in too-shiny leathers.

"Tell me whenever you're done, gentlemen. I can keep going all night." He took a gulp of the drink he had sitting on the nearby table before bending to another shot, this time taking a ball across the table and back, then colliding with another ball before slipping almost delicately into the corner pocket.

"He can, y'know," Dean put in, cheerfully. "I can vouch for that."

That caused the frowns drunk and drunker were wearing to take on a slightly puzzled cast, which just made Dean grin all the wider. People tended to naturally assume he and Alec were twins when they saw them together so when they started throwing double entendres at each other they got reactions ranging from puzzled to shocked to disgusted. Dean found it funny as hell.

"Hey now, if one of them bursts a vessel in their brain, I'll feel at least partly responsible," Alec chided, sighting down his que at his next shot.

"Yeah, that's always kinda messy," Dean admitted, as if causing people to stroke out was something they did on a regular basis. He took another swig of his beer as Alec sank another ball.

"Hey did I tell you about running into Cas at the Perk when we were on the island?"

Automatically ignoring the two hustlees, Alec glanced at Dean curiously as he held his que in place. "Yeah? Was he all subject-avoidy, or did you have a real conversation?"

"He apparently has got himself adopted by a cat," Dean said, snickering as he remembered.

"Glad you two have stuff in common," Alec said dryly, returning his attention briefly to the table to execute his shot, which slipped quietly into the side pocket while gently moving aside the eight ball.

"From what I can gather from what he told me, the cat thinks he's a giant bird of some sort and keeps trying to eat him. Starting with his shoes."

"Smart cat," Alec said, snickering.

"Yeah, that was my thought too. Also optimistic," Dean said chuckling again. "I gave him a few pointers on the care and feeding of a cat -- he'd apparently been giving it a real whole tuna to eat, and then complaining about the mess."

"I'll assume that's a bad idea, 'cause I don't remember trying it on Hunter," Alec said after a moment's thought.

"Tuna out of a can is a lot neater. Which I explained to Cas. With words of one syllable. It took while to get through."

"...Aren't angels supposed to be superior? Closer to God and whatever," Alec asked, his tone indicating he was not entirely on board with that assessment.

"Yeah, but God apparently has never let them have a pet," Dean said. "I even had to name the cat for him. He was just calling it the Cat."

Alec frowned. "He doesn't know how to name things?" He held up a hand as one of the drunken wannabes attempted to break into the conversation. "Hey, do you mind?"

At the owlish blinking he got in return, Alec turned his attention back to Dean with a raised brow of 'do you believe this guy?'.

"Yeah, said that was all a son of Adam deal." Dean rolled his eyes. Angels. What were you going to do? "You didn't ask what I named the cat." He paused dramatically before answering the unasked question. "Angelbane."
