If I could, I'd just spend all of my time reading the forums. Everyone from beginners to professionals are on there and I've learned so much just by reading. I bet if you did a search on "d70 vs. Rebel" or whatever--you would get more debate on the forums than you know what to do with.
The deal really is--they are both good cameras. I don't know about you, but it will take me YEARS and YEARS before I'm good enough to see enough of a difference between the two cameras. I like Nikons. I just do. I think the d70 is an awesome camera. It has a bit more flexibity, imo, than the Cannon and I like Nikkor lenses (although I can't afford what I want). With either camera, you will be taking SUCH a leap forward from what you have now--you are going to enjoy either one.

So, I've been out there looking at them this morning.. I have a concern re the Canon -- it appears that it only uses EOS lenses. That ould eliminate the lens' that I have.
Did you look at the D100 ? and just like the D70 better?
And did your D70 come with any other lens other than the basic one?
You can compare shots (not shot for shot, but it will give you a rough idea about what Cannon shots look like vs. Nikon) here: http://pbase.com/
I like dpreview.com a lot. Here is where they review cameras: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp
Here is a side-by-side comparison: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos300d%2Cnikon_d70&show=all
They also have kick ASS forums: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/
