The Academy Awards judges must lately consist of legless albino mormons with down syndrome. Almost every film I've seen that was nominated (and/or) won, turned out to be way disappointing, even for the stuff I wasn't super psychotically excited to see.

The latest entry? The Fighter. I'm a HUGE mammoth David O. Russell fan, have been quite into his previous stuff, especially I Heart Huckabees, so I knew I'd someday have to peek a look.

And it's certainly a well put together movie with nice performances (Bale is especially fun) and some memorable bits and pieces, but it's totally the least exciting, most generic film of Russell's whole career. I don't expect him to only make wild, subversive comedic dramas with lots of eclectic characters and utterly unpredictable storylines, but The Fighter was so drab! The movie does absolutely nothing new with the well-worn 'underdog boxer' genre. Flat as pancakes!

Tonight it's going to be the much anticipated for me foreign film, We Are What We Are, which is apparently about a family of cannibals dealing with the death of the father, who inspired and provided bodies for their dining experiences. With him gone, they must now fend for their own feasts of flesh! Supposed to be extremely well put together, approaching such a fantastic premise with absolutely dramatic sincerity. No sort of demented, over-the-top gore orgy stuff. Should be interesting!
