Mermaids - Some Are Awesome, Some Are Not

I recently discovered that youtube harbours a great many Disney films. Cut up into little pieces, yes, but you get the complete picture in the end. I figured it was about time I looked at an old favourite, The Great Mouse Detective. It turned to still be awesome, although Ratigan is the most camp Disney villain in the history of camp Disney villains. Seriously, everyone, look at that film again, study Ratigan's body language, look at his lair, look at his cat, and then attempt to tell me to my face that that rat is not camp.

Anyway, where are the mermaids? I seem to hear you say. You are right, of course, but I thought I ought to note the Disney film that started it all. You see, after this little piece of Disney gold, I decided to move on to the first Disney film which starred a mermaid. The Little Mermaid is, of course, pretty awesome. The facial expressions are really well done, the songs are good and the villain is very villainy. Then, I decided to have a look at the latest Ariel film, Ariel's Beginning. Where during the very first film the writers at least attempted to turn some expressions into more aquatic counterparts, this movie doesn't even bother. You hear mermaids referring to feet and legs they do not have, and problably never will have either. This is silly. Not to mention Ariel's sisters are almost all of them valley girls. No wonder she needed to get away in the earlier film (which is chronologically placed after this piece of crap).
After watching this, and being a bit bored, I deciced I should attempt to watch the film that followed after the first one, namely Return to the Sea. A bigger piece of crap sequel has not been made, although I still need to work my way through Cinderella 2 and Belle and the Beast 2. They must be out there somewhere. Anyway, back to the monsterpiece at hand. The villain in this one is Ursula's sister who suffers from a major mommy complex for having always been undervalued and her sister Ursula being mother's favourite. Not surprising, all things considered. The deterioration of the baddies is obvious, since Ariel's Beginning has an evil...governess! OMG! Anyway, to make a long story short, Return to the Sea has Ariel's daughter, Melody, as the main protagonist. She is annoying, vindictive at incredibly inopportune moments and just generally a pest. Ariel looks exactly the same as in the first film, albeit less well-drawn. The problem with this is that we are now twelve years after The Little Mermaid, a rather substantial period for the physical state of someone who has also had a child at the beginning. Yet, Ariel still looks like a bloody anorexic. Honestly, Disney! Way to go!

Anyway, that was it for now. I just felt the need to rant at the poor quality of the sequels. I don't know what happened to make the writes turn to crap, but honestly.
