How does one say "Hello" in Afrikaans? I wish I knew so that this subject could be ethnic.

Well, guys, I'm alive and in South Africa. If anyone's been counting, I got off the plane less than six hours ago-- the travel was intense and absolutely crazy. I haven't slept since then, as it's early afternoon here and I'm trying to make it until around 7:00 or so tonight. It should be doable. I was one of the few people to sleep at all on the planes/in the airports. (The other sleeper was my travelling companion, Colin, who spent near the entirety of both flights unconscious.)

Today I saw the sun rise over Africa as we touched down. We got out of the airport at around 9:00 after exchanging our money. We took a bus to Cape Town to the Backpacker Hostel-- it's incredible. No central heating to speak of, but considering how temperate the climate is here (around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, I'd imagine, during the day), that's no big deal. We'll just use sweatshirts. It's beautiful, more like a villa than a hostel. There's a swimming pool, an outdoor area, a built-in Internet cafe (but only with four computers, so that's why I'm not there now).

So far our experience in South Africa has been woozy wandering around the nearest four streets in Cape Town (we're downtown) and the frenzied snapping of photographs. I'm going to load up on coffee in a minute, as I don't think I'll get very far without doing that and I have a five-page essay to write on an exceptionally depressing book this afternoon.

I miss all of you already (I know it's only been two days) and I expect comments, e-mail, the like. My e-mail address is imakereaverscry at gmail dot com if any of you need it. I'll probably be able to check e-mail every day or every other day.

ETA: OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS. I JUST LOOKED AT MY FRIENDSLIST AND SAW ALL THESE ENTRIES ABOUT ZOMBIES. I'M ALREADY ON A STRANGE CONTINENT AND COMPLETELY DISORIENTED, DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO DO THAT RIGHT NOW?! I already terrified myself by watching Blood Diamond on the flight over (I really shouldn't've. No one ever watch that movie immediately before going to Africa, ever).

Also, all of Spohali will be interested in this: I saw my first episode of Supernatural on the way over. The only one available was "Faith", about the faith healer and the reapers-- it was cool, though it probably would've been far more awesome had I not been half-asleep and woozy and onna plane. Looking forward to watching more when I get home.

africa, travelling
