My MIL is well-intentioned, but she really is from another world as far as I can tell. We went into this place called D&L sales, and I literally have never been in it. It is full of cheap crap. The only thing that I thought might be worthwhile is that they have party supplies for kid's parties. I'm even considering getting the pin the tail on the donkey game for the first day of school as a team-building exercise. Anyway, she was telling me a story, and I'm not making this up, about how she was in this store with her friend and they both saw some specially decorated garden gnome. Unbelievably, there was only one left, and even worse, they both wanted it. But, Madelyn saw it first, so she got it! I was feigning interest and trying really hard to not laugh because I always wondered who REALLY wanted those miserable, stupid things. Now I know. Old Polish ladies. So, Ilona got some ice cream, and had a nice time with her grandma. God willing, she won't inherit her taste.
Saturday was the GREAT DIAPER DERBY. The good news: Claudia was the fastest in her heat. The bad news: She's easily distracted and stopped just inches from the finish, so she lost. She started out by falling on her face, then she saw the ball that another mother was using to entice her baby. Claudia crossed lanes, practically pushing two boys out of her way to get that ball. She got the ball, sat down, and started trying to eat it. This is when the owner of the ball came by and Claudia thought he was more interesting than the ball, dropped the ball, and she headed for him. I had to put down the video camera because it looked like she was about to do her "grab the nose really hard and bite the face" maneuver. She does it without malice...she's just a baby, but it hurts adults. By this point, a much slower baby steadily made it to her mommy and won the heat. Everyone got a bag from the grocery store full of treats. The winners got even more. It was fun. Ilona thought it was a hoot, too.
