So, saw Dead Man's Chest. Am now officially torn between signing up at
ot3_100 for Jack/Will/Elizabeth or Jack/Will/Norrington. Of course, you're all required to stop me from doing either.
But, anyway, on to spoiler-packed thoughts, all safely behind the cut, and all wonderfully chaotic. I write as memories come back to me.
"I feel sullied and unusual."
Do you, Jack? 'Cause I'm feeling seduced and titillated.
From the very first shots, with unfamiliar soldiers storming Port Royal as Elizabeth sits in a storm alone, hair and wedding dress artfully drenched by the torrential rain, there's no denying that this is one fucking gorgeous movie. Not just the cast, who are as lovely as ever, but every single aspect. Davy Jones and his crew are ridiculously life-like, with Davy Jones himself being a work of complex make-up and digital art. (I'm already drooling over the potential documentary on the DVD detailing the transformation of Bill Nighy.)
But who cares about that, when there's Johnny Depp bursting out of a coffin?!
I'll admit to being slightly worried - I trust the man explicitly to entertain me, but Jack Sparrow in Curse Of The Black Pearl was written to be somebody entirely different, and I was concerned that the script could become clumsy if the writers catered to Depp's portrayal. Unfounded fears, it turns out, because it's as wonderful as ever. Silly and saucy and fun with the wonderfully wry humour a perfect foil for the sight gags (Sparrow flirting with Elizabeth, a cannon pressed against his crotch, anyone?) Admittedly, there are times when it gets too silly. After all, most movies wouldn't be able to get away with one sequence of a chase/fight taking place inside/on a rolling ball/wheel, but this film has two! Still, it just fits - it's a pirate movie, and family entertainment, and while it feels ridiculous, it never feels out of place.
Will and Elizabeth are as wonderful together as always, which may be why it jarred me so much when she and Jack started kissing. I love that they took the threesome dynamic and ran with it, rather than trying to fob Jack off with any new female characters, and that things aren't easy and the writers never try and make it that way. But Will was right there! Elizabeth's a smart woman, I know that she was planning a trap but I really think she could have been more careful about making sure her fiancée doesn't see her trying to playing tonsil tennis with another man. Of all the cliff-hangers presented at the end, the inevitable shift in their relationship was the one that had me thirsting for more. Will's quite obviously pissed, Elizabeth surely knows that Will saw, and they're both being wonderfully British and repressed about the whole thing. Lovely and icy and so obviously going to blow up at the most inopportune moment, and, again, I hope the writers make as much of it as the situation deserves and don't provide any easy ways out.
Speaking of cliff-hangers, the Barbossa thing was awesome, but foreshadowed enough that I guessed it, and I'm pretty thick when it comes to predictions and red-herrings. The monkey's presence, the way the monkey settles down at Tia Dalma's place with an odd look off-screen. The second those footsteps started down the stairs, I just knew that my suspicions were confirmed. And, like I said, I'm easy to fool.
Speaking of Tia Dalma, I love her, and her bloodshot eyes, and her ink stained mouth, and her delicious delicious accent. She bloody rocks and I hope she gets plenty to do in the third film, especially more interaction with Will, because that was just funny as hell (and I can't blame the woman for cracking on to that.)
Will gets whipped. By his father. I will not comment on this at this time, since my libido is still recovering.
The sword-fighting took a long time to happen, but when it did, it was worth it. Eat flaming sword, fishy bitches! And Elizabeth got to fight, and got to fight well, which pleased me greatly. Her strop about Jack, Will and Norrington ignoring her to fight was comic genius, with much screaming, throwing of rocks and pretend fainting. Nice to see her character getting in on being a part of the fun, rather than damsel in distress.
Also, that threeway? Hottest. Thing. Ever.
Which leads me back to the Jack/Will/Elizabeth vs. Jack/Will/Norrington problem, which is one I shouldn't even be contemplating. Damn me, and my inability to say no to shiny pretty challenges.
Still musing on the
idea of trying to organise the wealth of Digimon fic into something more comprehensible. Have been given lots of interesting ideas to consider, and some wonderfully designed reccing lists to examine for ideas.
daisukenoyuuki has also been discussing starting a Digimon fic exchange, which would be all kinds of ace. Is it wrong to get excited about it already?
And, to end on a particularly important note, Futurama is coming back! I'm sure this is probably old news to a lot of you, and I may have even been told before and completely forgotten, but I am excited nonetheless! Squeeee!
