So, another six months rolls around, which means another Jewel of Yorkshire festival, so
rhubarbtriangle,
aunty_cis and a couple of hundred other like-minded souls have headed off to Saltaire for the weekend.
This means I have a weekend (and a house) to myself, and consequently I start Friday night's drinking early and finish late ;-)
Saturday starts in its own good time, then, and I have few plans other than to get an outfit sorted out for
morecake and
mr_s_face's Steampunk party. Since we have run out of coffee at home I check out the new place on Hillsborough Corner. One large Americano and a salmon and cream cheese bagel later I've added the Java Lounge to my list of likely refeshment stops, and feel ready to face the world. The place seems to occupy a niche that neither Jalucy, Maggie May's or the other one really seem to fill, so it's a good addition to the place IMO.
I strike lucky on the waistcoat front in the second charity shop, and promptly realise I can build up the rest of it using stuff I already have, so I can relax a bit. The item in question is a women's size 16, which I thought would be quite big until I tried it on. A little generous around the waist, sure, but actually quite tight round the shoulders. Women must have tiny arms ;-)
Fake pockets not so good for the pocket watch but whaddya want for £4.50?
After that, a little window shopping in town for cheap basses, sort my rail tickets out for next week, oh yeah, and buy a Zeppelin.
It must surely be the smallest-scale model I've ever seen (if you don't count globes I suppose) - it was barely 4" long which makes it about 1:2500 by my reckoning. It snapped together in about 10 pieces and only cost £2, but somehow I feel it failed to capture majesty of the original. Anyway, add two helium balloons and Bob was my uncle for the evening.
It was a great evening with some fantastic costumes and some quality Pirate Metal to boot. Shame about the choice of beer, but then again it was due to this that I woke with a fairly clear head this morning, so there you go.
After a bit of housework (only a bit mind) I strapped my longbow onto the tandem and pedalled off up to Sheffield Manor for archery practice. I figured since parking was scarce I may as well give the Red Peril II a shakedown run into the bargain.
So where were you buggers?
;-)
Ah well, found out a few things about the tandem on the way, eg you pretty much get whichever gear you're given, and the allen bolts on the rear axle need tightening to about 200lb. ft. judging by the number of times the wheel slipped forward and started rubbing on the chainstay.
Anyway, I can't help noticing it's still a beautiful afternoon; the kind that cries out to be spent in a beer garden with like-minded folk.
Anyone up for a couple at the Hillsborough?
