The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey today. Overall, I enjoyed it very much. Here are some thoughts:

  • Martin Freeman was excellent as Bilbo. So delightfully awkward and fidgety.
  • Radagast was ridiculous. I don't mind his looks, but I wish they had written him as less...high-strung and rabbitish.
  • The glimpse of Thranduil made me squee. On this inside.
  • The Goblin King was surprisingly charismatic.
  • Hugo Weaving (as Elrond) got sexy. And I want to raid his wardrobe.
  • What happened to Galadriel's beautiful LotR dress? Did it deteriorate in storage, or is it still on tour? The one she wore for the White Council...looked like layers of white veils with rows of tiny sequins sewn in. It looked cheap, or at least hastily made. That one tiny detail bugged me more than perhaps it should.

And one more thing to add, not about the movie itself, but still relevant: one of the trailers for a mech movie called Pacific Rim, had a very familiar voice for an AI: GlaDOS. Marysia and I checked when we got home, and dug up some proof. While it may not be GlaDOS herself, it's the same actress, with the same voice filters. It felt weird, and...kinda wrong. Some of the mech design elements reminded me of Portal, too. (A trailer can be found at the link.) So much so that at the end of the preview, I said loud enough for the rest of the theater to hear, "For Science. You monster." It made a couple people laugh. :)

ETA about Galadriel's dress: It occurred to me that, after six or seven years, and having a kid, Cate Blanchett may no longer fit into her old dress. The costumers probably didn't want to spend a long time on an outfit for a couple days of filming. :(
