There’s all kinds of discussion, some of it heated, some of it really cool, going on over at
ccfinlay's house about the Babe Bomb, the plan for women writers to send stories to the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction on August 18th.
Discussion is great. Means people are thinking and talking about the magazine, about editorial taste, about gender in the genre, about good and bad intentions, about all kinds of things that need to be talked about. Nick’s even shown up, so you know the discussion degenerated into exciting accusations of strawman arguing and people calling each other assholes. The more people that comment over there, the better. Damn, I love that stuff!
The comment that, for me, best summed up the purpose for the Bomb came from Lori Anne White:
For me, this has *always* been for the fun of it. It's always been for the challenge of it and for the, "Hey, let's get together and put on a show!" of it. It has always been an "us" proposition, and not an "us against them" proposition. This may seem like an overly naive view, given that there is a very specific location to which all these stories are being sent (I'm not saying "target." I'm *not* saying "target!") but I firmly believe and will continue to do so that there's nothing mean-spirited or "punishing" in our choice of address.
With Lori's words in mind, here in the comments section I invite you babes, grrrlz, wimmin, womyn, and women who are participating in the Bomb to check in and say hey, and receive support and feel part of a community.
If you’re an X-chromosome challenged, manly male man, you’re welcome to check in, too.
I'm not going to moderate comments, but if you want to discuss the situation beyond voicing support (even ambivalent supportishness is welcome!) or checking in, please take it to Charlie's place and join the discussion there.
