I attended a fireside with Dr. Streetman (Dean of UT's School of Engineering) last night. OMG he's such a grades/test scores/rankings whore! The admissions office rejected an applicant who had a 1600 SAT score (under the old system), so he went and personally made them admit her. Doom. Is that even ethical? Also, he goes out and recruits high-performing students the same way an athletic program recruits top high school athletes: taking their families out to dinner and sweet-talking their parents and throwing piles of money at them. Yay! He also refuses to hire senior profs unless they're one of the best in their field and is eligible for an endowed chair. Otherwise, he insists on hiring literally-got-their-Ph.D.s-six-months-ago newbies. But hey! Hot young profs! Yay! :P
Then things got somber and freaky when Streetman began to tell
this story. I sort of knew about it beforehand because the crazy prof made the papers again last year for trying to hire his cellmate to have Streetman and Bostick and someone-else-I-don't-remember-who assassinated. The students who've never had the story before were freaked out though. And then everyone rushed over to the ENS to look at the bullet holes. Yay! On one hand, you kind of feel bad for the crazy prof because his behavior is obviously a medical condition from his aneurysm. On the other hand, BITCH YOU DO NOT MESS WITH DR. BOSTICK! (Lol Bostick is the nicest and jolliest old man I've ever met.)
Then a guy asked Streetman if he's going to spend his retirement playing Warcraft. The end.
