When I first joined LJ, I thought they were pretty and clever, but I didn't see the point of them for me, and for the first few years I used a simple (and to be honest rather crude) version of my default (which, for anyone who doesn't know, if from the film Alice by surrealist Jan Svankmajer, and versions of which have always been my default).
But once I started, I found I really enjoy making them, way more than I can actually use myself :) I find them restful and fun, and for someone as hopelessly inartistic as me (I remember once reading a joke, someone's claim that their skill at drawing "begins and ends with baths", which is about right) these tiny photomanips are a lovely little hobby...
