It was getting late ( ... )

The name jerked him out of his thoughts. The card was removed from the plate quicker than he even realized he was moving; the hologram disappeared in a flash of light and he turned slightly. He wasn't expecting anyone else to be standing there. Still, seeing Yuugi was a slight surprise.

"Mm, Aibou?" He still wanted to talk to him. Maybe something was wrong. Did Yuugi need help?

Yuugi stepped back at the sudden movement, and as the 'monster' vanished quickly. He glanced to the space it was occupying just moments before, and then to his other self.

"Ahh.. sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt you."

He smiled, though it was very weak. He certainly didn't want to make Yuugi feel unwelcome. That was never his intention. A shake of his head.

"You're not interrupting anything." Nothing that was important, anyway. It was better that he had. He couldn't take looking into those familiar eyes of the hologram. It was just more self torture.

Worry found its way into Yuugi's expression, but he smiled anyway. Why was Atem out on his own like this?

"...oh. Okay." He wanted to ask, but for a moment, he felt silly that he distracted Atem. Even if he wasn't 'interrupting' anything, Atem still had something on his mind.

"What are you doing out here?"

His Duel Disk was released from the dueling position. He wasn't going to be using it, so why bother? He then lowered his arms back down to his sides as he approached carefully.

"I just had a lot on my mind." He couldn't hide anything from Yuugi, even if he wanted to. He wasn't sure that he did, but he knew that he didn't want to trouble the other. Or burden him. The mere thought had his stomach turning.

"Anything in particular?"

He can't keep himself from asking.

He looked at Yuugi for a long moment, just thinking about whether or not to divulge his information. He knew the moment he did it, Yuugi would be upset or burdened. None of those were any outcome he wanted. None that Yuugi needed to deal with.

His hand moved down to ghost over the puzzle. "I'm starting to wonder if I should be keeping this around." His eyes lowered. "And I've been finding myself wondering about.... the choices I've made."

Seeing him touch his puzzle made him antsy to get back to his, but he tried to ignore that for the moment. He took few steps closer, making up for the one back from before, and looked at the puzzle.

"Did something happen to it?"

The last one rang a bit too close for comfort, and he tried to ignore the nervous feeling he got. His voice slightly dropped in volume, though, as this conversation was rather personal... for both of them.

"What choices?"

A small shake of his head. "No." Nothing had happened to it. It was just that he was becoming so used to it, so used to having it in his head, working with it, being okay with what it did. And that wasn't okay. Especially considering where it had come from. He wasn't sure it was right to keep it around anymore.

Crimson eyes raised and then lowered again. What choices? There were a lot. But the ones bugging him recently had to do with his stay here and his departure from...

"It has to do with future events." A disclaimer. He didn't want to divulge information Yuugi didn't want to hear. It would be unfair.

Yuugi's expression weighed with more concern briefly at the negative response, but he no longer shifted his eyes away from his other. He wished he could just... understand. Know what happened, or what's going to happen. The future was so.. vague to him, and he wasn't sure if he liked that.

"The... future? You mean the time that you and Kaiba-kun are from?"

"Kaiba is actually from a further time than I am." Strange as that seemed. He never really thought to ask how leaving had affected the other man. Maybe it hadn't. He couldn't really be sure. And now that thought was plaguing him.

He needed to stop this. "Just where I'm from." The exact moment it all happened. It left him feeling empty some days, knowing that he could lose all of this in the blink of an eye. Everything for nothing. But.. the afterlife wasn't nothing either. He was disappointing people on both sides no matter what he did. It hurt.

Yuugi didn't realize they came from different times. Then again, he more or less assumed they were both from similar points.. since the future for him was still just that.

"Where..."

He trailed off, paused, felt like he was treading somewhere he didn't want to go. It was from the future, and Atem was no longer part of him.

"Where are you from?"

The hesitancy was clear, and Atem really couldn't blame the younger. So he'd give him one last chance. He gave him a very serious and deep look, no longer worrying about his own regrets. He wasn't about to hurt Yuugi with this information unless Yuugi really wanted to know.

"Are you sure you want to know? There's no going back once you do." Unless he left again... which was still another story for a later date. ..no. He'd probably never tell Yuugi that one.

Yuugi swallowed, feeling a lump form in his throat. This was.. uncomfortable. He could feel the air tense, the feeling of the unknown looming in the distance.

But he had to know, he had to. It was bothering Atem and he didn't like that at all. But the fact that Atem was showing restraint, as if offering him a way out bothered him as well. Why shouldn't he know, especially if it was going to happen anyway?

"You shouldn't have to deal with this alone." He said softly, after a moment. "I want you to talk to me. I want.. to help."

He felt a little warmer already, a soft smile, just from hearing that alone. But now wasn't really the time for it. He stepped closer, just on the outskirts of being in Yuugi's personal space. But this conversation was private. Even if there was no one else around... he wanted to make sure Yuugi understood that. Not many people around the island knew about him or his circumstances.

"Once everything quiets down, after I get your soul back and beat Dartz, there's another tournament. But after that, things got quiet enough for us to finally get all the God cards together in Egypt. After that happened I was separated from you and our friends and sent back in the past. You all came, too, but we were apart for a while. I was left on my own, still with no memories, trying to figure out who I was and what I was supposed to be doing."
