yuletide cheer and burglary; week one story list

Jan 07, 2010 12:27

My one and only new year's resolution is to read at least 5,000,000 words in 2010. Books and fan fic are the only things counting towards this goal, and some weeks there might be covers. Occasionally there will be notes, and sometimes (like this week) I will start and then forget to finish. Since this is the first one I also want to note that I obviously read a lot, so not every story will be mentioned. Also, if a fic is on this list that means I liked it, I stop reading very quickly if I'm not enjoying one, and nothing gets counted. Don't expect silly things like proper grammar and sentence structure, ... or proof reading.

Oh Leverage, why have I never read stories about you before? Thank you Yuletide for reminding me that fandoms other then BtVS & BBT get written about. The first story down the list I'd like to mention is Deck the Tree with False Blossoms by Ishie. I read it while things were still secret, and it doesn't surprise me in the least that she wrote it. From the very beginning I could picture every scene, and this line by Parker made me laugh out loud. (Probably waking a few people up in the process.) - "I don't want to give up my money," she moaned. "But you guys are making it so hard." - Continuing in the Leverage trend Your head's a dead tomato splot with moldy purple spots, Mr. Grinch. by Smercy gets a mention for the Firefly marathon, and then Parker's show of skills at the end just made me grin wider.

I foolishly read Yin and Yang out of order. It still worked, but the character descriptions in Yin seemed to pop out easier, (perhaps just because I'm more familiar with Leverage, although I'm nearly up to date with White Collar - WC just has such a larger pool of characters I suppose... in Leverage you know it's one of the gang, but random FBI extras happen all the time on WC.)

The third vignette in "In Dreams" was probably one of the most original Penny and Sheldon stories I've read in a long time. The word "court" brought to mind the fantastic costumes and sets of The Tudors, although I'm terrible with timelines and am not really sure how they would line up. But still - a dark wood room, a colorful dress and jewels for Penny, the throne... From the story itself I loved the perverse delight, and long lashes. And that he was very short.

The Hokum Hierarchy Determinator by Slybrunette has taught me that I'll pretty much love anything she comes up with. Most stories with actual change frighten me, but this one took me from canon to present so seamlessly that I barely thought about it. Of course that's what happened! Another story like that is The Sum of Educated People by Cereal, written by an author that I do know I will love anything written by her. (Also: Is it weird that I consider Big Bang Theory and Community to exist in the same universe? I can't put my finger on why...)
