Over the last six months I've used MSN as little as possible, and mostly used google's relatively new software for chatting.
However, inertia affects most people, and so, on the odd occasion I feel the need to chat to someone that isn't on my google list, or someone who made it onto my google list only to not log into it ever again, I run msn.
MSN isn't really all that bad. It's cluttered, plagued with advertising (and a dozen or so tabs I never use), its protocols for file transfer are inefficient, and it's a bit too easy to hack, but it's got a lot of gimmicky games and features which google haven't caught up to yet, and it has alot of users all using the same protocol, which is nice.
I'm not totally against advertising either. It's a good way to make money without charging your users for your product. But it can be really annoying. For example:

I make a point of not reading girly magazines which have a photo of an impossibly gorgeous girl on every second page, and pages full of in depth descriptions of the diets all the thinnest stars are on, mainly because it's never done my self esteem that much good, and it's not like any of the content is relevant to me anyway. I prefer my geeky magazines full of glossy pages of shiny gadgets, and a dvd full of new software to play with.
But this ad.. A photo of a gorgeous photogenic woman, who is appears to be single, with a profile on some singles website. Why would I click on that ad, and put my profile next to someone's like that? Surely if she was on the add there must be a gorgeous woman just like that hiding, waiting for you somewhere in the great long list of sad singles profiles. Who'd click on my profile, when there was such a gorgeous young woman on the ad...
Possibly the men that believe they'll never get a woman like that. Possibly the men who hoped to find a woman that hot on the website, before giving up and clicking on an average looking profile. More likely it would be sleazy, gross men that lurk the Internet, who contact every profile they can in the hope they'll find someone stupid enough to sleep with them and catch their diseases, before they start bottom-feeding off the floor of the Internet looking for the next gullible piece of trash. Or sick men who just want something preferably human and female to jerk off to, but don't really care. Do I really want to put a profile up that creepy men like that can see?
I'm quite happy to not bring my existence to their attention.
[sorry, bad mood]
On the bright side I got to shave someone's head today :)
