"To me she was very much a symbol of sunlight."

Who was she? She was born in Missouri in the pregnant year of 1904. She attended Vassar College but was apparently "no bluestocking." She loved psychoanalysis, the tarot, art history & other party games.

She married twice. The second wedding earned her a kind of immortality.

And as Moses lifted the serpent in the wilderness,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up.

She was a year older than I am now when she died. The atomizer had broken. The others walked in an uneven procession behind.

She was plagued by an intermittent allergy to horses. Her husband was, of course, a noted horseman.

"I have sometimes, though rarely, yielded to the temptation of exhibiting a genealogy of sentiments."
