So this past week I've been taking a class on CiscoWorks. I think it's a pretty good NMS, if you're operating a network that is primarily populated with Cisco devices.
Non-work related, a few weeks ago, I bought a new TV for the living room. It's a Sony 40" LCD HDTV. It's a really nice TV. I'm able to do things like label all my video inputs (There's like 8 video inputs on the TV). There's also a lot of picture tuning options.
When I bought it, the guy at the shipping\recieving dock argued with me saying the TV was "expensive and couldn't be placed on it's back or front." Of course, this is true of plasma TV's, because the crystals will shatter, but LCD TVs are essentially a giant LCD monitor and won't break from that. Hell, I own two 19" LCD monitors and I've layed them face down when screwing in the locking screws for the connectors. Anyway, the box didn't fit in my friend's car, so we had to transport it out of the box.
I've had a computer sitting here for awhile, that I intended to use for NWN module testing purposes for the PW I develop for (as well as a file server), but it got little use, especially because we stopped development for NWN1 to prepare to transition to NWN2. I decided to turn it into a media PC, since the TV takes a DB-15 connection in the back. The video quality for downloaded video (Like Lost and stuff) is so much better than when I used to transcode them to DVD and watch them on the PS2.
The setup pretty much looks like
this.
You can see a green cable running to the right of the picture. That's a Cat5 cable running to the back of my computer, so I can transfer files to the media PC and give it internet access (omg don't hack my TV!!!). The old 27" JVC got moved into the bedroom, on top of the dresser. I can coax into the bedroom, so we now have cable in the bedroom too! Whoo!
Tonight I worked on my Dell laptop that died before I left Iceland. I got it functioning again, but it seems there is a fault in the video module, so it's essentially unable to handle anything beyond standard VGA (no 3D graphics). However, it can do the internet still and I got both the wired NIC and the Wifi PCMCIA NIC working. I used the wireless card to troubleshoot the wireless router I bought (for Somni, because she's all "omgiwantwireless"). Apparently the problem was that it wasn't broadcasting the SSID, which is why the network couldn't be discovered.
With the router fixed, I'm going to buy a wifi NIC for the media PC and do everything over the air.. That way there's no green 15 foot cable running through the living room, down the hall, and into the computer room.
